Column By: RAY ROGERS / RPW – FONDA, NY – Mother’s Day Weekend at the Fonda Speedway is always special and this year was no different.
Fresh flowers were in order for the first teachers in our lives…our Mothers. Fonda paid tribute to all the wonderful Mom’s out there with a spectacular Saturday night show.
On a beatiful evening, before I knew it, hot laps were called to the Speedway. Pro Stocks rolled away first and Luke Horning laid down fast time. Rich Christman was fastest in the Limited Sportsman. Adam McAuliffe was at the top of the Sportsman speed chart and Stewart Friesen set fast time for the Modifieds.
Pro Stocks took to the racing surface for three heat races and Nick Stone, Luke Horning and Josh Coonradt picked up right where they left off last week, grabbing the qualifying wins. Limited Sportsman took over next for there events that Alan Hanson and Dylan Eldred took victories in.
Sportsman Heats went away next and Cody Clark, JaMike Sowle and Brian Pessolano all claimed checkered flags with Modified heat winners being Willy Decker, Rocky Warner and Brian Gleason.
The Street Stock Feature took to the smooth, but slick, racing surface for the first feature of the night and Dave Horning Sr. snatched another victory, this time over Jason Samrov, Stephen Young, Michael Arnold and Cliff Haslun.
Ken Hollenbeck picked up the 12-lap 4-Cylinder Cruiser Feature. Cole Lawton, Josh Samrov, John Napoli, and Zach McSpirit rounded out the top 5.
Limited Sportsman rolled next for their 15-lap shootout that had Brett Mortensen jump right out to the lead and never looked back, scoring his first win in the class. Spencer Rapp settled for second. Brendan Gibbons was third with most-recent winner, EJ McAuliffe, fourth and Alan Hanson fifth.
The Pro Stock feature was next up and Ivan Joslin jumped right out to the early lead. John Roese made his way to second place and would be challenged late in the race by Chuck Dumblewski. Chucky who would finish third with last week’s winner Luke Horning fourth and Josh Coonradt finding his way to a top-five finish.
Modifieds were set to go for 30-laps next and Rocky Warner spent most of the event working on Darwin Greene who jumped out to the early lead. Rocky would prevail and go on to claim his second-career Modified feature win.
Stewart Friesen would come on strong late in the race and finish second with Willy Decker third. Michael Maresca scored a solid fourth-place finish and defending track champion, Bobby Varin, was fifth at the checkers.
The Sportsman feature closed out another great night at Fonda. JaMike Sowle was the early race leader. That was until a mid-race restart re-racked the field and 13th-place starter, Tim Hartman Jr., took over the lead and went on to score his first win of 2019.
Sowle would have to settle for second. Brian Borst came home third with Cody Clark finished fourth and Tony Farone rounding out the top 5.
