Early NE Winners Set For Short Track Super Series At Thunder Mountain

Story By: BRETT DEYO / SHORT TRACK SUPER SERIES – CENTER LISLE, NY – A talented field is set to congregate at Thunder Mountain Speedway this Sunday, May 28 for the annual ‘Lightning on the Mountain’ special.

The Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By VP big-block/small-block Modifieds battle 50 laps around the three-eighths-mile clay oval with $5,000 going to the winner and $400 just to take the green flag.

Some of the Northeast’s most recent winners will converge on the Mountain for the STSS special.

Andy Bachetti of Sheffield, Mass., is three-for-three at Afton (N.Y.) Motorsports Park this season, in addition to besting the field at Lebanon Valley Speedway (West Lebanon, N.Y.) on Opening Night and scoring the ‘Hard Clay Open’ victory during the STSS Halmar International North Region lid-lifter April 9 at Orange County Fair Speedway in Middletown, N.Y. Bachetti leads the North standings into Thunder Mountain, where he searches for his second career victory.

Brian Krummel of Middletown, N.Y., is off to an outstanding start in 2017. He was the Accord (N.Y.) Speedway Opening Night winner and, on Saturday, broke into the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series 358-Modified win column at Pa.’s Grandview Speedway. Krummel and his Zubi’s Racing team will chase STSS North points this season after a top-10 effort at the Orange County opener.

The very first checkered flag of the ’17 Northeast season fell on Neshanic Station, N.J.’s Jimmy Horton in March at Del.’s Georgetown Speedway. Horton, also an Orange County winner, plans to make his Thunder Mountain debut in the ‘Lightning on the Mountain’ Sunday.

Horton’s Halmar International teammate Stewart Friesen of Sprakers, N.Y., has earned checkered flags in ’17 at Bridgeport (N.J.), Albany-Saratoga Speedway in Malta, N.Y., and Fonda (N.Y.) Speedway. Friesen is a past STSS winner at Thunder Mountain and will search for another score on Sunday.

Already having Accord wins to their credit, Jerry Higbie of Newburgh, N.Y., and Anthony Perrego of Montgomery, N.Y., both plan the trek to Thunder Mountain: Higbie in the Lowitt family No. 48 and Perrego driving Brian Smith’s Superior Remodeling No. 44.

As announced, Billy Decker of Sidney, N.Y., will return to Thunder Mountain on Sunday aboard a Jeremy Smith-owned No. 91. Decker topped the Super DIRTcar Series opener at Fulton (N.Y.) Speedway in April.

The invaders will have to face Thunder Mountain’s regulars, led by defending champion Danny Creeden of Wurtsboro, N.Y., who has already won twice at Thunder Mountain in addition to an April Five Mile Point (N.Y.) Speedway score.

Joining the Modifieds on the program are the STSS Open vs. Crate 602 Sportsman ($1,000 to win) and Chad Sindoni Memorial for Street Stocks paying $1,000 to the winner.
