The Weather Forecast For Upstate New York This Weekend (June 29-July 1)

Forecast By: REBECCA LADD / RPW – METEOROLOGIST – Here is the upcoming forecast for this weekend near Upstate New York, so you can plan accordingly.

The shortwave trough is moving offshore, allowing the upper level ridge to setup shop. By Sunday the heart of the ridge will be setting right over the Northeast. With the ridge will come increasing temperatures and rising humidity levels. Sunday into Monday will be the hottest stretch. Then early next week the ridge will flatten and start to breakdown a little bit, cooling us off a little.

Today is the start of an extended heat wave. Sunday into Monday will be the hottest stretch. The combination of 90+ temperatures and the high humidity will lead to dangerous heat indices (real feel) temperatures. The heat indexes for New York State and New England could see heat indexes as high as 105 to 110. While parts of Pennsylvania and the northern Middle Atlantic dealing with heat indexes of 110 to 120 degrees on Sunday and Monday. Even Interior Maine could see air temperatures in the upper 80’s to low 90’s.

Northern New York State and northern New England, especially near the Canadian border, has a a chance for a showers & thunderstorms late Saturday afternoon into the evening, as a complex of storms moves to our north. Some of those thunderstorms could be on the strong to severe side. For the rest of the region there will be the chance for isolated pop up showers and storms due to all the humidity. If you were under one of these rain could be heavy at times.

Then by the start of next week (as I’ve been saying) the ridge will pull west as a trough sets up shop over the East Coast. As the jet swings south, it will get rid of the heat. As the cold front moves through it will set off showers and thunderstorms later Monday and especially Tuesday thru Thursday.

Words of caution.

During the heat, make sure you drink plenty of water. Stay indoors with air conditioned air. Avoid spending time outdoors during peak daytime heating hours. If you must be outdoors be sure to take plenty of breaks and drink lots of water (no caffeinated drinks). Don’t leave pets or children in the car. Make sure your pets are inside or has a shady spot with plenty of water. It has been a cool year so far. I know in my neck of the woods, Lake Ontario, Lake Champlain, St Lawrence has cold surface temperatures. I’m sure other interior lakes and rivers will be as well. So be mindful of how long you stay in the water. Hypothermia can still be an issue.
