Matt Janczuk Takes DIRTcar Sportsman Central Region Victory At Brewerton Speedway

Story By: DAVE MEDLER / BREWERTON SPEEDWAY – BREWERTON, NY – A large and enthusiastic crowd, a full pit area of race cars and demo cars made Friday at the Brewerton Speedway fun for everyone in attendance.

Matt Janczuk from Durhamville, NY, would take the lead on the opening lap of the 40-lap DIRTcar Sportsman Series Central Region feature. The victory was not an easy one as he had to hold off first Alan Fink, getting through heavy traffic and then late race challenges from Chris Mackey for his first win at the speedway.

Other winners on Billy Whittaker Cars & Trux night were, Quinn Wallis (4-Cylinders) and Joe Isabell (Mod Lites).

Matt Janczuk would take advantage of his front row redraw starting spot taking the lead at the drop of the green of the Sportsman feature while racing was two and three-wide behind him in the early going.

With 5 laps showing on the scoring tower, Janczuk would open a six-car advantage as Alan Fink and Richard Murtaugh fought for second with Mackey and Mike Fowler in the top-five.

The yellow would wave on lap 14, erasing the advantage Janczuk built, putting lapped cars between himself and Fink.

At the halfway point, lap 20, Janczuk held a narrow lead over Fink with Mackey, Fowler and Zach Sobotka within striking distance of the top-two.

While Janczuk was clicking off quick laps on the bottom groove of the speedway, Mackey worked his way into second and was closing the gap running the topside of the speedway and would get the break he needed with a late yellow setting up a shootout to the checkers.

Over the final laps Mackey threw everything he had at Janczuk, even pulling slightly ahead on one lap. Janczuk, after seeing Mackey to his outside, changed his lane and would outrun Mackey by 0.627 at the checkers. Mike Fowler, Amy Holland and Nick Guererri would complete the top-five.

After the Sportsman feature, Max Hill, Quinn Wallis and Tyler Murray were in victory lane as the speedway wanted to recognize the drivers as they chose to race over being at their high school graduation Friday night. The school board president at Murray’s school came to the speedway to present him with his diploma.

After a few years away from racing, Joe Isabell made his return pay off in only his second race back. Isabell took the lead in the 20-lap AmeriCU Credit Union Mod Lite feature on lap 2 and then would hold off constant late race pressure from division points leader Justin Williams for the victory. Mike Mullen, Kyle Demo and Tom Mackey finished third through fifth.

A season-high 22 cars signed into the pits for the Fleet Repair 4-Cylinders.

Chuck Powelczyk and Quinn Wallis have battled it out all season for 4-Cylinder wins. After knocking on the door to victory lane more than once in 2021, Wallis kicked that door wide open taking his first win of the year. Powelczyk, Tony Frezzo, Damian Bechler and Eric Rowley finished second through fifth.

A pair of wild demo derbies ended the night with Alex Schell from Syracuse, NY taking top honors in the $1,000-to-win 4- & 6-Cylinder Chain and Bang. Chad Winne from Davenport Center, NY grabbed the $1,500-to-win Big Car Demo.

This Friday, July 2nd is one of the favorite events for fans on the racing calendar. The Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints Speedweek will do battle on the ‘D-Shaped Dirt Demon’ for $2,500-to-win. Joining the night of horsepower and speed will be the 800-horsepower Tracey Road Equipment DIRTcar Big Block Modifieds, DOT Foods DIRTcar Sportsman and the Fleet Repair 4-Cylinders.

Adult grandstand admission is $25 with everyone 18 years old and younger admitted free. Pit admission is $40. Pits open at 4:30 pm, grandstands 5:30 pm, racing 7:30 pm.
