RPW Exclusive: Demetrios Drellos Turns Heads In Super DIRTcar Series Event At Mohawk
Column By: MIKE WARREN / RPW – HOGANSBURG, NY – While Mat Williamson was the winner on Saturday night at Mohawk International Raceway, Demetrios Drellos put on his best performance yet in Super DIRTcar Series competition.
The Queensbury, NY driver led through most of the first half of the event, after drawing the pole. Drellos had mixed emotions about his time up front.
“I found it exciting, eventful and a hard task, navigating lap traffic early was difficult” Drellos said.
The full straightaway lead for the 111 would evaporate when the caution came out for Cameron Black, bunching up the field for a double file re-start. That had Drellos contemplating a number of thoughts under yellow.
He said in part, “The first thing I had to worry about was a game plan to continue my lead, and what lane would be the right one to pick on the start.”
Drellos went to the outside, and ran a couple of laps on the top side wheel to wheel with Billy Dunn. That’s when he got a little too high through turns one and two, costing him a couple of positions.
At that point in the event, the track began to take rubber on the bottom side of the raceway, leading to the cars hugging the inside.
“The last 50 laps were grueling and demanding, it was very single file but sometimes that happened in racing,” said Drellos.
Drellos was hovering around the top five until he was shuffled out of the lane in the events late stages. He would end up finishing tenth.
With the strong run at the front of the field for most of the event, it should give him more confidence heading into the next race on the SuperDirtcar series, at Albany-Saratoga Speedway.
In his young career, Drellos has had some success, with a feature event victory to his credit at The “Great Race Place.”
