RPW Column: Mat Williamson Named RPW New York State Stock Car Association Performer Of The Year For 2019

RPW Column By: MIKE WARREN / RPW – ALBANY, NY – He took home a lot of big money, high prestige wins this past season, and now you can add another title to the list for Western New York Modified campaigner Mat Williamson.

Williamson is the 2019 Race Pro Weekly New York State Stock Car Association (NYSSCA) Performer of Year.

Some years, determining this honor takes a lot of debate…even a vote at times to determine a winner. That was not the case this time around. Williamson clearly stood out among the crowd.

History has shown that the winner of the Billy Whitaker Cars 200 at Super DIRT Week put himself in a great position for this award each year. However, for St. Catherine’s, ONT pilot, the 2019 season was much more than that.

The first huge notch in his belt came during the Centennial Weekend at the Orange County Fair Speedway. While that weekend will be remembered for a lot of things, it was the Behrent’s 3 car in victory lane after 160 grueling laps, taking home the massive $100,000 prize.

Williamson backed that up with big Super DIRTcar Series wins at Brewerton Speedway’s Duel at the Demon and backed that up the very next night at the Mohawk International Raceway. That was a $17,500 weekend. Not too shabby

What set him apart from everyone else, however, was the final three weeks of the Super DIRTcar Series season.

He won at Super Dirt Week, finished third at Brockville, but then held off Matt Sheppard in battle that came right down to the wire at the World Finals in Charlotte to win his first Series championship.

With those accomplishments, there’s no question that “Money Mat” is this year’s recipient of the award, adding this to the number of accolades he received last season.
