Solid 12th Place Finish At Devil’s Bowl Gets Rob Maxon’s King Of Dirt Season Off To Good Start
Story By: BOBBY CHALMERS / MAXON RACING – POWNAL, VT – With all that Mother Nature has thrown at local race teams as of late, the Maxon Racing Team was able to head to the state of Vermont to run in the first King of Dirt Sportsman Series race of the season, and came away with a solid 12th place finish.
After struggling all night and being forced to take a provisional starting spot based on 2017 series points to get into the show, the team put in 110% effort to make the car better for the feature, and it seemed to work as the Dane’s Auto Parts #96 drove forward in the 30-car field.
We just missed it in time trials and the heat race,” Maxon said. “The car was better in the consolation race, but we just ran out of time. Lucky we got the provisional, so we threw the kitchen sink at it and it was a different car for sure.”
Maxon’s charge to the front was amazing to see, as he got as high as seventh at one point.
“We definitely were coming towards the front and got up to seventh before the yellow came out,” he said. “I think we had a shot at the top five for sure., but I missed my mark going into turn one and slip up in the loose after that. I fell back to 15th and was able to get back to 12th at the checkers.”
Even with the trying night, Maxon is excited about the team’s tour car and their schedule ahead this coming weekend.
“We learned a lot with this car and left with good momentum for Utica-Rome (Sunday night), knowing we can run lap times like the rest of the guys in the series are,” he said. “Having this car be comfortable and winning last time out at Lebanon Valley, I think we can run very well, even win, both races this weekend.
The next race for Maxon Racing will be this coming Saturday night at Lebanon Valley where Rob will go for back-to-back wins before heading to Utica-Rome Sunday for the next King of Dirt Sportsman Series event.
