Story By: TAMMY WYNNE / SHELLHAMMERS SPEEDWAY – SHOEMAKERSVILLE, PA – The first Wingless Wednesday Series is in the books and the fans saw some of the best racing for not only the opening night, but so far this season for small car racing. The teams rolled off for practice laps to make last minute changes and be sure they were ready for the nights activities.

The 270 Wingless Micro Sprints would start off the night with their heat races first, as they have two sets of qualifying heat races to determine their feature starting order. Nick Sweigart and Richie Hartman would lead the first heat to the green flag for the opening race of the 2017 Wingless Wednesday Series. Hartman would take the lead and old off the chillness of last last place starter Brandon Edgar in order to take him the win.

The second heat would see Matt Hoffman hold off Adam Minzer Jr. for the win after their 10 lap battle was only delayed by a single caution flag when Ron Kreider spun but was able to rejoin the field. The starting orders of the first set of heats would be inverted for the second set of heats for this division.

The first group up for their second round of heats saw Brandon Edgar be able to lead the race from green to checkers and set himself up for a great starting position in the main event. The second group’s second heat was won by Glenn Macomber.

The 25 lap Main event for the 270 Micro Sprints had some great side by side, slide action passing through with many multi car battles for the same position. Richie Hartman and Matt Hoffman would lead the field to the green flag and the battle was on. It was not long before Brandon Edgar was ready to be in the top spot but Hartman would battle him.

As the first and second place car came up on the slower car of Brian Boyer, there was some contact between the three that left Boyer sitting on his roll cage right at the 3rd turn exit off of the track and the red flag to come out. Boyer was ok and able to continue while both the top drivers never slowed and continued to battle even to the caution despite this minor incident.

As the race resumed, the action started to heat up behind the leaders as Matt Hoffman, Adam Minzer Jr and Matthew Kreider all wanted to take over the 3rd place position. These three drivers kept swapping around the position in a multi lap battle in which Hoffman eventually came up short and spun out in turn 4 bringing out the final caution of the event and resetting the slight distance that Edgar had put between himself and Hartman. Edgar would be able to hold off Hartman’s attempts to pass in on the restart in order to gain the opening night Victory, Hartman would follow him across the line in second, followed by Nick Sweigart, Adam Minzer and Glenn Macomber.

In the Senior Slingshot Class, Dakota Kohler and Austin Daniels would lead the field to the green. Kohler and Daniels would have a great battle going that was joined by Jeff Kemp and quickly the battle turned into Kemp verses Daniels. Kemp would begin to pull away from the field as Kohler, Daniels and Brett Bieber began to battle for the 2nd place position.

The caution came out after the leader, Kemp, came around to lap Myron Moyer and contact was made, Kemp did not slow down but Moyer did come to a stop. Kemp would keep his spot at the front of the field and bring the field back to the green. This allowed Bieber, Kohler and Daniels one last shot at the win, but Kemp would be able to hold them off. Brett Bieber would finish in 2nd followed by Austin Daniel, Dakota Kohler and Kyle Smith. The heat race was won by Dakota Kohler.

The Excel Modifieds were in action as well, and Jason Dunkleberger had his eye on the prize of parking his North Jersey Truck Center sponsored ride in Victory Lane for the season opener. He was able to find the best line around the track and made winning look easy Wednesday evening as he swept both the heat and feature wins. Dave Dimaio would take home the runner up spot in the feature, followed by Sam Scicchitano, Barry Stufflet and Ray Gradwell.

The Junior Slingshot feature and heat events were won by Nicho Flammer, Tyler Ulsh finished second in both events and Emma Flammer finished 3. The 125 Micro Sprint Feature and heat events were won by Kyler Heiney with Ron Zimmer being runner up in both.

The action will resume Saturday evening, April 15 and it will be the opening night for the regular Saturday series. The drivers are anxious to begin their 2017 season and everyone has their hopes set on finding their way to Victory Lane that evening.
