RPW Column: AJay Potrzebowski II Dominates Melvin L Joseph Memorial STSS Sportsman Series

Column By: ROBERT SYMONDS / RPW – GEORGETOWN, DE – After a strong run in South Carolina at the Lakeview Speedway, the Potrzebowski father-son duo decided to pack up their cars at their Elmira shop and head to the coveted Melvin L Jospeh Memorial at the Georgetown Speedway for the Short Track Super Series Crate 602 Sportsman event.

First time ever seeing the speedway, AJay Potrzebowski II had a solid top 10 in timed practice sessions on Friday evening in preparation for the full race event on Saturday. With over 60 Crate Sportsman drivers taking time during the practice sessions, this top 10 was something solid for Potrzebowski to build on ahead of Saturday.

On Saturday evening, Potrzebowski II had a great qualifying effort has he took the lead in heat 5 and took home the victory over Robby Dunn by 2 seconds. In the 25 lap feature, Potrzebowski took the lead from Payton Talbot right off the start. However Talbot would not go quietly into the night as he would trail just off of Potrzebowski’s back bumper. As the leaders caught lap traffic, Potrzebowski made quick work of the first few lap cars and ended up clearing lap traffic in just a few laps to find some clean air.

With 7 laps to go, Cory Cormier cleared Payton Talbot for 2nd but it seemed too little too late as Potrzebowski already was a straightaway ahead. Potrzebowski in his AMP General Contracting, Fastline Performance 72 ended up putting a 6.2 second lead on the field as he took home the biggest win in his career.

“This is my first time ever racing here and its my first big win so this is awesome,” AJay Potrzebowski said on Saturday evening in victory lane.

The entire 25 lap feature went green to checkered after the very quick caution off of the original start.

“This track was fast! Going through lap traffic, I hit the inside wall trying to pass one of the guys. I think I knocked the toe out or something, it was bad after that and I was just holding on to make it to the end.”

Potrzebowski also mentioned how the track was taking rubber with his right front tire tread nearly gone.

The long haul from Elmira, NY to Georgetown, DE paid off for Ajay Potrzebowski II. Look for the AMP General Contracting 72 as he plans to travel a bit more in 2021.
