Devil’s Bowl Speedway Revises Finish From Sportsman Feature On Sunday, June 28th

Story By: JUSTIN ST. LOUIS / DEVIL’S BOWL SPEEDWAY – WEST HAVEN, VT – Devil’s Bowl Speedway officials have revised the official finish of the Pepsi Sportsman Modified feature held on Sunday, June 28. An error in the original results has been corrected, and the point standings have been updated to reflect that change.

A thorough review was conducted of the electronic scoring system, the handwritten scoring sheets, and video of the event, and it has been concluded that driver Bobby Hackel was incorrectly placed ninth in the finish order. Hackel was involved in an incident with nine laps completed in the race and drove his car to pit road for repairs during the resulting caution period. He was not on the track for the completion of lap 10 after the race restarted, but he returned to the track during another caution period with 10 laps complete and his electronic transponder and car number were each mistakenly scored in that lap.

With Hackel officially one lap down, he has been moved to the 22nd finishing position for the June 28 race. As such, the season-long championship point standings have been adjusted; including the three events that have been held after June 28, this drops Hackel from his previous standing as the point leader to third place, 13 points behind leader Demetrios Drellos and 10 points behind second-place Adam Pierson.

In fairness to Hackel, he will be given retroactive credit within the weekly handicapping system to reflect the difference in position, which will work to his benefit.

“This is an uncomfortable position to be in, but it boils down to right and wrong,” Devil’s Bowl Speedway promoter Mike Bruno said. “We discovered the error late last week, almost two full weeks after the June 28 race, and we put a lot of effort into our review to make sure that there was, in fact, a mistake on our part. It is very rare that something like this would or even could happen, but it did, and we have to make it right.

“It’s unfortunate that Bobby Hackel will lose the point lead, but it’s only fair to him and to the rest of the competitors that we make things right before we go any further,” Bruno continued. “Bobby is having a great year and he deserves to be in contention for the title, and this change certainly will not take that opportunity away from him.”
