The Roard Of Engines Heard Again At Fonda Speedway Saturday

Story By: RON SZCZERBA / FONDA SPEEDWAY – FONDA, NY – On Saturday June 6, exactly eight weeks away from when it was supposed to take place due to the COVID-19 virus, the “Track of Champions” roared to life with the sound of racing engines and the smell of racing fuel again evident at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds facility with an open practice session for all divisions of racecars.

Approximately 70 racecars took to the new clay surface for the practice session in all of the regular divisions at Fonda including the Sunoco Modifieds, the Swagger Factory Apparel Crate 602 Sportsman, the Montgomery County Office for Aging Limited Sportsman, the Algonkin Motel Pro Stocks, the Robert’s Towing & Recovery Street Stocks, and Four Cylinder/Cruisers along with Sprint cars, and the Mohawk Valley Vintage Dirt Modifieds.

All safety procedures were in place including face masks being worn by everyone in attendance along with social distancing in the pit area with distance kept in between each of the race cars.

A total of five sessions were held with defending Sunoco Modified Track Champion Rocky Warner setting fast time in the Sunoco Modified division with a time of 19.571. Swagger Factory Apparel Crate 602 Sportsman rookie EJ McAuliffe set fast time in that division with a lap of 20.271 while Tucker O’Conner set fast time in the Montgomery County Office for Aging Limited Sportsman division with a lap of 20.840.

Defending Algonkin Motel Pro Stock Track Champion Luke Horning was fastest in the division with a lap time of 22.597 with Zach Sorrentino quickest in the Robert’s Towing & Recovery Street Stock class with a time of 25.102. Cory Sparks was on hand with his Sprint car and set fast time with a lap of 17.898.

With the open practice now complete, the focus now turns to opening day for the 69th consecutive year of competition on Saturday, June 13 with a racing program consisting of the Swagger Factory Apparel Crate 602 Sportsman, the Algonkin Motel Pro Stocks, and the Mohawk Valley Vintage Dirt Modifieds along with practice rounds for all other divisions. Gates will open at 3:00 p.m. with hot laps at 6:00 p.m. and racing at 7:00 p.m.

Then on Sunday, June 14 the Sunoco Modifieds will be in action along with the Montgomery County Office for Aging Limited Sportsman, the Robert’s Towing & Recovery Street Stocks, and the Four Cylinder/Cruisers with gates opening at 3:00 p.m. with hot laps at 6:00 p.m. and racing at 6:30 p.m.

Grandstands for all events will be closed due to New York State regulations.
