RPW Column: Ronnie Johnson’s Heading To The DIRTcar Nationals With Legendary Blue Hen Racing

RPW Column By: DYLAN FRIEBEL / RPW – DUANESBURG, NY – Announced on Friday night via his Facebook Fan Club, Capital Region Driver Ronnie Johnson will pilot the Eugene Mills-owned No. 30 at Volusia Speedway Park this coming February for the DIRTcar Nationals.

It will be the fan-favorite’s first time traveling down to Florida for the event.

“This came about because Eugene (Mills) and my dad (legendary racer Jack Johnson) have been friends for 35 years,” Johnson said. “I grew up around Eugene and Jaime (Mills) as a child. We know them very well.”

What made the decision to put Johnson in the Blue Hen ride?

“With Jaime having a back injury, they asked me to run their car down in Volusia,” he said. “It will be the first time I’ve run that track ever. I traveled down for years to help my father run there, but I’ve never had the chance to race there myself.”

For Johnson, and this new paring it is all about running well and having fun while doing it.

“You go to every race wanting to do well,” he said. “We want to run up front and have the results. I know they have good equipment and its always top notch. The plan for all five nights is to run up front, and if we can do that and have fun at the same time, it will all be worth it.”

the driver known simply as “RJ” is very honored to have the opportunity to run for the Mills family, a team that is always a force to be reckoned with.

“They always have great equipment and Jaime is hell of a wheel man himself,” he said. “I am beyond thankful and honored to run their stuff. They are building me a new car and have a track record of winning and doing good. They are the same team that built Kenny Brightbill’s 1988 Syracuse-winning Super DIRT Week car. To race for a legendary car owner like Eugene is an honor.”

Add Ronnie Johnson’s hat in the ring as he will try to capture a gator down in Florida in the iconic Blue Hen Racing #30.
