Chris Hile Drives To First Victory Of 2019 At Brewerton Speedway
Story By: DAVE MEDLER / BREWERTON SPEEDWAY – BREWERTON, NY – Chris Hile from Oswego, NY has knocked on the door of Brewerton Speedway victory lane this season but it never opened. All that changed Friday night as Hile not only knocked on the door, he kicked it wide-open in a convincing win behind the wheel of his Lightning Management, Gypsum Express, 1911 Hard Cider, LJL Kevlar Racing Engines, No. 5H, Bicknell.
In the 35-lap Tracey Road Equipment DIRTcar Modified feature, Hile would run down and pass early race leader Tyler Trump on lap 11. Once out front, Hile was flying, driving away from the field, building up a 4.5second lead on the field until the only caution of the race came on lap 32 to give the field one last shot at getting by Hile for the win.
When the green came back out, Hile got a great restart and would outrun defending track champion Jimmy Phelps and two-time feature winner Tom Sears Jr. to the checkers for the popular win with the fans.
Other winners on Syracuse Haulers & Collectibles Galore night were Alan Fink & Ryan Dolbear (DOT Foods DIRTcar Sportsman) Kyle Demo (U.S Air Force Mod Lites) Chris Bonoffski (Fleet Repairs Truck & Trailer Repair 4-Cylinders) Kenny Polite, Scott Gauthier (Dirt Modified Nostalgia Tour).
Tyler Trump and Katelyn Hile would lead the Modified field down to the green with Trump grabbing the early lead in the 35-lap feature.
Trump would open an almost full straightaway by lap 5 as Chris Hile ran alone in second with Katelyn Hile, Jim Witko and Joe August battling for top-five positions.
While Trump ran the top of the speedway, Chris Hile was hugging the bottom groove and it paid off as he ran down Trump and took the lead on lap 11 exiting turn four.
With 15 laps showing on the scoring tower, Hile, still racing on the bottom, held around a ten-car length advantage over Trump with August, Jimmy Phelps and Chad Phelps racing for top-five spots.
Hile was on rails with 10 laps to go as he opened a commanding 3 second lead over Trump as the final laps started clicking off the lap counter.
Just when it looked like Hile would go on to the win unchallenged, the yellow flag would wave on lap 32 erasing his 4 second lead and giving the field one last shot to steal the win away from Hile.
When the green came back out Chris Hile got a great restart and would outrun Jimmy Phelps and Tom Sears Jr. to pick up the popular win. Chad Phelps and Billy Decker would finish fourth and fifth.
Another large and quality field of Sportsman were pit-side setting up a pair of 25-lap features.
In the first feature Torrey Stoughtenger, Amy Holland and Jeff Prentice would all lead early laps where you could have thrown a blanket over the top-five.
At the 10 lap mark Prentice still led but had Alan Fink putting constant pressure on him with Holland, Zach Sobotka and Chris Mackey waging a battle of their own in the top-five.
With 10 laps to go Prentice was still feeling heavy pressure from Fink as they ran side-by-side for the lead. A few car lengths back Sobotka, Holland and Mackey were still slugging it out for third, fourth and fifth.
Finally, on lap 17 Fink saw the opening he needed to get under Prentice and drive by for the lead and then would drive away for the win. Jeff Prentice, Zach Sobotka, Chris Mackey and Amy Holland finished second through fifth.
In the second 25-lap feature recent Fulton Speedway Novice Sportsman graduate Ryan Dolbear would grab the lead at the drop of the green setting a quick early pace.
With 10 laps in the record books, Dolbear cruised out to a straightaway lead, leaving Brandon Carvey, Mike Fowler, John Strickler, Jim Spano and Bob Henry Jr. to battle it out for second through sixth.
Dolbear was driving the race of his young career opening a lead of almost 3 seconds with 10 laps to go. Carvey , Fowler, Strickler and Henry were racing for top- finishes.
With no yellows to slow the field down the rest of the way Ryan Dolbear cruised to his career first Brewerton Speedway Sportsman win. Brandon Carvey, Mike Fowler, Bob Henry Jr. and Kevin Root finished second through fifth.
With lady luck on his side, Ryan Dolbear’s steering broke going under the checkers and then would need a tow to victory lane.
In the 20-lap STARS Mod Lite feature Kyle Demo would lead every lap for his first ever Brewerton Speedway win. The win wasn’t easy as he had to hold off yellow flags and challenges from the division heavy hitters. Justin Williams, Tom Mackey, Joe Garafolo and Casey Sykes finished second through fifth.
Chris Bonoffski grabbed the victory in the 15-lap 4-Cylinder feature by leading every lap. His win wasn’t easy as he had to hold off repeated challenges from Quinn Wallis. Evan Wright, Chuck Powelczyk and Ken Pitsley finished third through fifth.
The Dirt Modified Nostalgia Tour made their first ever visit to the speedway bringing 24 cars with them in close, competitive racing. Feature winners were Kenny Polite, Scott Gauthier.
