World Of Outlaws Late Model Series Preparing For First 100-Lap Event Of Season
Story By: JORDAN DELUCIA / WORLD OF OUTLAWS – FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Model Series flies into Fayetteville Motor Speedway on Friday and Saturday, May 10-11, at the for the second running of the First in Flight 100.
Standing as one of the more unique events on the Series schedule, the format consists of hot laps, qualifying, heat races and a special dash event on Friday night, which sets the stage for a $25,000-to-win, 100-lap main event on Saturday.
Jimmy Owens took the checkered flag over Brandon Sheppard and David Breazeale in the inaugural running of the event last year, pocketing the richest prize in the state of North Carolina for Dirt Late Model racing.
Big tracks like these typically use every bit of horsepower in these 430CI engines, and veterans of the circuit like 2015 Series Champion Shane Clanton are used to testing their power-plant’s limits on those long straightaways.
“Any time you can stretch the legs out on the motor, it’s fun to drive, knowing that you run that fast,” he said.
Three-time Series champion Darrell Lanigan also has fond memories of racing on the big half mile.
“Fayetteville’s definitely a big, sandy track,” said Lanigan, winner at Fayetteville in 2014. “We’ve been there and got a win there also. I like some of the big tracks coming up, we’ll see what we’ve got.”
Heading into Fayetteville, Brandon Sheppard continues to hold his large points lead over Chris Madden, who’s been strong recently, coming off of a top-five at Cherokee Speedway last weekend. Lanigan, Chase Junghans and Clanton complete the top-five in Series points.
