Month Of May Brings WoO Sprints & Big Block Mods To Weedsport Speedway
Story By: DAN KAPUSCINSKI / WEEDSPORT SPEEDWAY – WEEDSPORT, NY – The month of May is a special time across the world of motorsports. The Indianapolis 500, Monaco Grand Prix and Coca-Cola 600 claim the majority of the spotlight, but the short tracks of America are ramping up their efforts as well, including Weedsport Speedway with the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series and the Super DIRTcar Series Big Block Modifieds taking on The Port in May.
Two of the most revered dirt track racing series in all of the country will be featured on the 3/8-mile this month, starting with the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series opening Weedsport’s season on Sunday, May 19 in the A-Verdi Storage Containers Empire State Challenge.
Last season, Brent Marks wowed the Weedsport crowd, holding off a hard charging Sheldon Haudenschild late in the game to claim the $10,000 victory.
This year, Brad Sweet leads the World of Outlaws standings as of May 1 over Donny Schatz, Daryn Pittman, David Gravel and Carson Macedo. Joining this year’s top runners will be fellow Outlaw travelers including Logan Schuchart, Shane Stewart, Ian Madsen, Haudenschild, Kraig Kinser, Marks and Jacob Allen.
An added bonus to the only World of Outlaws stop in the state of New York in 2019, will be former NASCAR Cup Series star, Kasey Kahne. Kahne will compete alongside teammate Sweet in his Kasey Kahne Racing No. 9 machine at The Port on May 19.
The Stirling Lubricants/Champion Racing Oil Modified Series will join the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprints Cars on Sunday, May 19 for a fast-paced one-two punch to open the season. The mighty Modifieds will compete for a $3,000 top prize with a $500 358-Modified bonus on the line.
The Stirling Lubricants/Champion Racing Oil Modified Series will feature a total of six events in 2019, with a $2,000 prize going to the overall series champion following the September 2, Labor Day 100.
Pit gates will open at 4 p.m. on May 19 with racing slated for 7 p.m.
Advanced purchase of a reserved seat by 11:59pm on May 15 includes a free Fan Pit Pass upgrade. Please visit the Fan Pit Pass Upgrade table nearby the Gearbox inside the main gate to redeem applicable promotion once main gates are open at 5 p.m.
Just one week following the World of Outlaws, the Super DIRTcar Series Big Block Modifieds will make their first of three stops to Weedsport for the prestigious Heroes Remembered 100 on Monday, May 27, paying $7,500 to the winner.
As of May 1, Matt Sheppard once again leads the Super DIRTcar Series after claiming a $10,000 victory in the Thunder in the Thousand Islands opener at Can-Am Speedway last month. Sheppard topped Mat Williamson, Billy Dunn, Justin Haers and Pat Ward for the lucrative victory.
Last year’s Heroes Remembered 100 saw a two-car thriller between Stewart Friesen and ‘Mad Max’ McLaughlin in the race’s late stages, which saw Friesen claim Victory Hill.
This year’s Memorial Day classic will see a full-house of Big Block Modifieds joined by DIRT Sportsman and the winged CRSA Sprint Cars.
Pit gates will open at 3 p.m. with racing slated for 6 p.m.
