RPW Exclusive: Almost Time To Rock & Roll On The Short Track Super Series
Column By: DYLAN FRIEBEL / RPW – MILLSBORO, DE – With the Short Track Super Series to be the “Lid Lifter” on the Northeast Modified season next weekend at Georgetown Speedway for the Melvin L. Joseph Memorial in the South Region it’s time to make predictions.
The South Region of the Short Track Super Series will visit tracks such as Georgetown, Big Diamond, Delaware International, Port Royal, New Egypt & BAPS Motor Speedway it looks to be a very competitive eight-race schedule to claim a new champion.
With Ryan Watt winning three of the four South Series championships (2015, 17&18) and Stewart Friesen winning the other one (2016), it’s hard to root against the 14w of Ryan Watt to be their series champion come October, so thats my pick. Ryan Watt will do it once again.
Dark Horse: CVD, Craig Van Dohren. While it’s hard to find anyone who’s been on a tear like Ryan Watt has been in the southern region, CVD, who finished 3rd in 2018 points, is a very consistent racer and will look to etch his name in Short Track Super Series history.
North Region: With a series of nine races to complete the 2019 tour, it’s not easy to win the Championship when you visit track such as Orange County, Accord, Woodhull & Fonda just to name a few.
This series is a tough one to master as there’s been three different champions in four year of the North Region. It all started with Stewart Friesen in 2015. Then Andy Bachetti back-to-back in 2016 & 17 and then the ‘Franklin Flyer,’ Billy Decker, in 2018.
Prediction: With Billy Decker rejoining Gypsum Racing for 2019 and running the full Super DIrtCar Series tour we may see a different champion in 2019. You many names poised to take the top spot such as Bachetti, Anthony Perrego and Matt Sheppard along with many other top drivers.
However i think runner-up in 2018, Anthony Perrego, will have a good 2019 and become the Short Track Super Series North Region Champion.
Dark Horse: Matt Sheppard…is he really a dark horse? What hasn’t he won? Oh that’s right, a Short Track Super Series championship.
The seven-time Super DIRTcar Series champion is always hungry and honestly the favorite wherever he unloads. However, his one Achilles heel has been Orange County Fair Speedway. He’s never tasted victory on the Hard Clay in any event run there, so look for him to be extra hungry.
Be on the lookout for all the action for the 2019 Short Track Super Series tour, if you have no been to a race when they roll into your town you need to go, its must see action.
