The Bounty At Glen Ridge Has Been Claimed; Brian Calabrease Wins Sunday Night
Column By: LAURIE FALLIS / RPW – FULTONVILLE, NY – When the bounty on two competitors at the Glen Ridge Motorsports Park started at $100, excitement grew to see if anyone could claim it. The answer was finally yes. Sunday night, Brian Calabrese took home the victory, besting the field, which included Tim Hartman Jr. and Dave Constantino, and in turn walked out of the Fultonville oval $1,800 richer.
Calabrese was the early leader of the main event of the evening with Hartman following along and Constantino in tow. Constantino took over second from the Parillo Services #22 and set his sights on the leader.
The caution flew on lap 10 and on the restart, Constantino powered to the lead. Game over right? Not so fast.
After the yellow flag flew on lap 22, Calabrese got the jump on Constantino to take the lead back and was able to stretch it out as the race continued on.
A late caution with two laps to go for debris on the track set the stage for a shoot out. As the green dropped, the field went into turn one with both leaders side-by-side. As they came to one to go, both were trading paint, still door-to-door.
As they entered turn one with Calabrese low and Constantino high, the 21c of Calabrese moved up a lane which caused the #7 of Constantino to go up the track. He made slight contact with the wall as sparks flew. Calabrese stayed on the gas and went on to claim the second big win of his weekend after taking home the King of Dirt Northeast Crate Nationals at Albany-Saratoga on Friday.
“I remember the same move being put on me,” Calabrese said. “It was nothing intentional. It was hard racing. I was going for the win and with the money on the line I just stayed on the gas. I’ve made something like $4,300 this weekend. Unbelievable.”
Tim Hartman Jr. would sneak through for second with Constantino having to settle for third. He was followed by Billy August and Limited Sportsman racer Ryan Heath who collected his first top five in the main division.
With his third place finish, Dave Constantino took home the 2018 Track Championship in the 602 Crate Modified Division.
The Limited Sportsman feature had Greg Perron jump out to the early lead and had his #3g was on cruise control. That was until caution came out that involved Friday night’s Malta winner, Derrick McGrew Jr. He was able to continue.
David Boisclair tried to challenge Perron but to no avail, but Ryan Heath wanted to join the fun. The driver of the #6R was able to sneak by Boisclair for second and began to chase after leader Perron.
The caution came out which re-racked the field and allowed Heath to start to the outside of Perron. On the restart, a battle for the lead ensued but Heath powered into the lead. However, the caution flew again before a lap was completed, so they went back to the last restart. This time, though, Perron elected to take the high side when the green flag flew. Didn’t matter though, as the same result took place. Heath grabbed the lead and never looked back taking the victory.
Boisclair would finish second followed by Derrick McGrew Jr. who fought his way back to a good finish. Perron was ended up fourth. McGrew is your 2018 Limited Sportsman Track Champion.
The Pro Stock feature had Justin Knight take the lead from Ivan Joslin and never give it up, holding off 2018 Track Champion Luke Horning in the later stages for the win. Horning was second with Devon Camenga, Steve Cosselman and Chuckie McSpirit completing the top five.
The Street Stock winner was Steve Cosselman. In the main event, he spun by himself, went to the pits, came back out and stormed his way to the front, taking the lead with a thrilling pass on the last lap for the win and the Track Championship.
4-Cylinder Dual Cam was won by Josh Samrov. PJ Bleau is the Champ. Wayne Russell Jr. won Single Cam after Keith Tessero was disqualified for running the wrong tires. CJ Shepler is the Single Cam Track Champion.
Sr. Slingshots saw Tyler Vadney come from sixth starting spot to make a crossover move on Mike Hill in the late stages. He went on to take the checkers with Hill coming in second followed by Danny Ballard and Jim Mudge. Hill is the 2018 champion.
Garrett Polland went out and claimed not only the victory but the 2018 Jr. Slingshot Track Championship. Adriana DeRocher , Sloan Cherko, Darryn Fallis and Connor Hill rounded out your top 5.
