RPW Exclusive: Scott Family Dominates Hummingbird Speedway Finale
Column By: ROBERT SYMONDS / RPW – REYNOLDSVILLE, PA – This past Saturday, drivers made their way north of Punxsutawney, off Route 80 to the Hummingbird Speedway for the final event of the 2018 Season. The finale provided not just one but TWO opportunities for Late Model drivers to grab a top finish.
The likes of ‘SLOWRIDE’ David Scott and his son Wyatt Scott decided to make the trip back to the Hummingbird Speedway for the double feature event. After discussing with Wyatt how the night went for him and his father, the response was “Our night couldn’t have gone any better.”
In the Fall Fest/Eric Witherite Memorial Late Model Special, the father/son duo had some ground to make up. Starting about midpack, the two had methodically made their way towards the front of the pack. On a late race restart, SLOWRIDE took the Suppa 4s to the bottom of the speedway and battle for the race lead with Jon Lee, who had led since the green flag.
Lee with a two car length advantage in turn 4 over Scott, got a little tight and that was just enough for David Scott to slip by. SLOWRIDE would continue to lead the remainder of the laps and secure the $3,000 Eric Witherite Memorial win while his son Wyatt would finish in the top 5.
The second Late Model Feature of the night would be the makeup feature for the Late Model Season Championship race that was originally scheduled on September 1st. Though Wyatt Scott was happy it fell on September 15th instead.
Starting second row outside, the young Garland, Pennsylvania native knew he had to make something happen. At the drop of the green, Jon Lee and Billy Dickson duked it out for the top positions with Scott in close tow. Dickson would check out past Lee and continue to log the laps while Scott and Lee kept battling for second.
A late race caution would set up something that leader Billy Dickson did not want to see. With both Jon Lee and Wyatt Scott on his back bumper, he would have to make sure he could maintain the lead over these hungry drivers. As the green flag flew once again, Dickson and Lee both took to the topside while Scott ran right down on the inside groove.
“Both of those guys were running the top,” Wyatt Scott stated the Sunday Morning after. “My tires finally got enough heat to lock into the track. I started running the bottom better and keeping up my momentum.”
Within 5 laps since the restart, Wyatt Scott was able to pass Lee for second and then take the lead from Dickson on the bottom just before the 5 to go signal was given. In the final laps, Scott drove away from Dickson and Lee to get his first Late Model win.
“We had a stellar night, we were fast but we also had luck on our side too.”
Talking with Wyatt Scott, we asked him what it was like to race alongside with, a legend, his dad David Scott.
“Getting to race with dad is so amazing. He is my hero and in my opinion the best in the sport.”
With the Scott Family dominate at the Hummingbird Speedway, they have some more momentum to carry themselves to the final races in the 2018 race season.
