Tim Sears Jr. Takes Victory Friday Night At Brewerton Speedway
Story By: DAVE MEDLER / BREWERTON SPEEDWAY – BREWERTON, NY – Great weather, a large crowd, close racing and unpredictable demo derbies took place Friday night at the Brewerton Speedway to end the month of June.
In the Tracey Road Equipment DIRTcar Modifieds it was a tale of two races in one in the 35-lap feature. Modified veteran Tim Sears Jr. grabbed his first win of the season. Two young rookies, Ron Davis III and Tyler Trump brought home top-five finishes showing the future of the division is bright.
Tyler Trump would jump out to the early lead and was fast using the high groove of the speedway while the racing behind him was two and three-wide as they battled for positions on the “D-Shaped Dirt Demon.”
Trump, still using the top of the speedway that got him the lead, would impress everyone in attendance opening a comfortable lead consistently clicking off fast laps.
After moving to second place from his tenth starting spot, Tim Sears Jr. would use the bottom of the speedway to slowly reel in Trump who was still on the top-side. On lap 23 Sears would get a run off turn four to be scored the new leader. Once out-front Sears was never seriously challenged the rest of the way. Tyler Trump and Ron Davis III would put on a show running side-by-side lap after lap with Davis finishing second and Trump third. Gary Tomkins finished fourth and Max McLaughlin fifth.
Mark Yorker who returned to racing in 2018 after years away from the sport, never really looked like he was away as long as he was, because Yorker has been fast all season, even taking a feature win at the Fulton Speedway.
In the holdover June 22 SUNY Canton DIRTcar Sportsman 25-lap feature, Yorker, working the bottom of the speedway, would take the lead from Joe Kline on lap 9 and then would out-run Alan Fink to the checkers for his first ever Brewerton Speedway win. Kevin Root would come from deep in the field to finish third with early leader Joe Kline and Rich Townsend fourth and fifth.
Finally! Rich Townsend has been fast most of 2018 in the SUNY Canton DIRTcar Sportsman only to come up short. Friday all that changed as he put his No. 51 in victory lane with a convincing win. Behind Townsend the battles were close lap after lap with Kevin Root, Scott Prentice, Stephen Denton and Amy Holland finishing second through fifth.
Chris Mackey related he made some changes to the car after his heat race, after barely qualifying. Those changes paid off as he was the class of the field grabbing his second win of the year in the second 25-lap SUNY Canton DIRTcar Sportsman feature. Will Shields, who started 10th could keep pace with Mackey, finishing second with Nick Krause, Willy Decker Jr. and Mike Fowler finishing third through fifth.
In the JB Logging & Firewood 15-lap feature, recent high school graduate Evan Wright gave himself a happy graduation present. Wright started 12th and passed the heavyweights of the division taking the lead on lap 6 and then cruised to his first ever Brewerton Speedway win. Chuck Powelczyk, Quinn Wallis, Jack Taskey and Ray Bechler finished second through fifth.
In a pair of wild Demolition Derbies there was fire, rollovers and hard collisions that kept the crowd on their feet and cheering. In the 4&6 Cylinder Chain and Bang, Kevin Carey was the winner with Jeff Snyder winning the Mini-Van & Small Truck Junk Run.
This coming Friday, July 6th is one of the must-see events on the racing calendar when some of the top talent in the 360 Sprint Cars in the Northeast, Ontario & Quebec will converge on the Brewerton Speedway for the Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints Speedweek. Joining ESS on A-Verdi Storage Containers night will be the Tracey Road Equipment DIRTcar Big Block Modifieds and the SUNY Canton DIRTcar Sportsman.
Adult grandstand admission will be $22 with 18 years and under $5. Pit admission is $35. Grandstands will open at 5:30 pm with racing at 7:30 pm.
