New Racing Surface Removed At Afton Motorsports Park
Story By: JR KENNERUP / AFTON MOTORSPORTS PARK – AFTON, NY – After the racing concluded at the Afton Motorsports Park on Friday night in which there were many concerns about the rough track surface, which caused numerous expenses to all racing teams that were in attendance. Afton Motorsports Park track promoter Ronnie Ford spoke and listened to many of the racing teams who were in attendance.
The conclusion was that the only solution that would be acceptable to everyone is to remove the new surface that was put down late last year. This process was started on Saturday morning in the rain by AMP track preparation head Mike Ford and his team and by the time racing fires back up this Friday night May 18th. The AMP racers will be back racing on last years surface that they finished the season on.
” I’m a former racer and I know from prior experience that a rough race track creates a whole bunch of added expense to the racing team ” said AMP track promoter Ronnie Ford. ” From parts breaking to added maintenance to silt from the track hurting the motors. It all adds up to added expense that many of the racers who have supported Afton Motorsports Park from day one can’t afford. That is why I decided to remove the new surface and go back to the smooth surface that we had at the end of last year and we will be back racing on the old surface this Friday night. We tried to make the track surface better and more tire friendly and obviously it didn’t work. ”
