Practice Is Now Over; Afton Motorsports Park Set To Go Green This Friday

Story By: JR KENNERUP / AFTON MOTORSPORTS PARK – AFTON, NY – After two very successful practice sessions over the last four days, Afton Motorsports Park is ready to open their 2018 racing season this Friday night, May 11th and finally the weather is on their side!

As of Tuesday night a 100% chance of racing is set to go this Friday night at Afton Motorsports Park. On tap will be a full show for the ZMK Construction Modifieds, Chambers & O’Hara Open Sportsman, Butler Auto Sales Crate Sportsman, Rinker Insurance Agency Street Stocks, IMCA Modifieds, and Four Cylinder Trucks.

On Friday night pit gates open at 4 pm, grandstand gates open at 4:30 pm, mandatory drivers meeting at 5:45 pm, hot laps at 6:15 pm, and first heat goes green at 7 pm sharp. Pit admission is $30, grandstand admission is $12, senior citizens age 62 and up are $10, youth aged 9 to 14 are $5, and under 8 with a paid adult admission are free.

This past Monday night, May 7th another round of practice was held with four IMCA Modifieds, five Open Sportsman, seven Crate Sportsman, five Modifieds, two Street Stocks, and five Trucks on hand.

The track was still loose and wet in spots but it did hold together much better than it did from the practice that was held on May 4th. The AMP track preparation team led by Mike Ford completely tore up the track after practice in an attempt to dry out the wet surface even more and get it ready for Friday night.

Quick times on the night were set by Rusty Smith in the Modifieds with a 15.000 best lap. In the Open Sportsman Tyler Hart set fast time with a 15.725 lap and in the Crate Sportsman Blaine Klinger set quick time with a lap of 15. 976.

Overall quick times of the two practice days with the following drivers being guaranteed to start no worse than fifth in their respective feature on Friday night. In the Modifieds Chad Cook had fast time of 14.878, Open Sportsman quick time was Tyler Hart at 15. 725, Crate Sportsman fast time was Blaine Klinger with a 15.976.

All Street Stocks and Four Cylinder Trucks who were in attendance on either practice night will have their car number entered into a drawing. The lucky car number in each division will be drawn on Friday night at the drivers meeting will start no worse than fifth in their feature on Friday night. The national sanction of IMCA would not allow any special incentives to be used for the IMCA Modified portion of the program.
