Wolfe “Preys” On The Field For Williams Grove Opener Win
Column By: NICHOLAS FILLMAN / RPW – MECHANICSBURG, PA – Lucas Wolfe grabbed the Williams Grove Speedway sprint car opener on a brisk Sunday afternoon in what would be the speedway’s first opening program run as a “day show” since 2008 when Fast Freddie Rahmer collected the feature event victory.
Wolfe had a strong weekend aboard his weekly sprint car ride with the Barshinger Racing 24 entry collecting a second place finish on saturday at the Lincoln Speedway.
Sunday’s show marked the third consecutive feature event in Central Pennsylvania where Wolfe would occupy the front row after the redraw event. Last Saturday Wolfe would have issues at Lincoln after leading the first lap and having a DNF.
A hard charging Greg Hodnett was able to finish second in the feature event in a race that would see Wolfe have a near ten second lead before a caution flag on lap 22. Caleb Helms, Freddie Rahmer Jr, Brock Zearfoss, and Jason Shultz would round out the top six.
Four of the 19 drivers in the field would have bad days which included Brandon Rahmer having engine issues leading to a start and park effort, Tyler Esh blowing an engine in his heat race while running in the third position, Brian Montieth flipping violently in turn one on lap one of the feature event, and Anthony Macri getting upside-down on a late race restart.
Two drivers who invaded Central Pennsylvania this weekend were Ohio’s Caleb Helms and New York’s Coleman Gulick. Helms would finish the Sunday feature in the third position and Gulick coming home in ninth.
While the car count may only have been 19 cars, a number of teams in the area opted not to run this weekend due to the cold temperatures, and will begin their seasons in the coming weeks.
