Marcuccilli Takes Sportsman Win At Canandaigua Before Rain Comes
Story By: PAUL SZMAL / CANANDAIGUA MOTORSPORTS PARK – CANANDAIGUA, NY – Labatt Blue and Labatt Blue Light presented Saturday night’s racing action at Canandaigua Motorsports Park, as the battles for the track championship continued with only two point races remaining after Saturday night’s action.
The 25-lap Sportsman feature began with Austyn Fugle jumping out to a big lead. Dave Marcuccilli came up to third by lap 8 and at the halfway point was challenging Anthony Kimble for second place. Marcuccilli was able to run down Fugle under green, but the first caution flew on lap 16, which parked him on Fugle’s back bumper for the restart. Marcuccilli took over the top spot a lap later and managed to nurse the car home for his fifth win of the year…and had to have his car pushed to the pits after it stopped on the backstretch on the cool down lap. Fugle and Kimble held second and third at the flag, followed by Kevin Ridley and Matt Guererri.
Parker Smith and Brad Steinruck traded the lead back and forth at the start of the 15-lap Street Stock feature with Marc Minutolo getting past Rick Crego for third spot. Minutolo was able to get into second spot and after a few laps of battling with Smith he took the lead and pulled out an advantage. Adam Depuy, who slid high on the opening lap and fell out of the top five, drove his way back through the field to third by lap 10, but could not catch Crego and leader Minutolo. At the finish, Minutolo had his second win of the year, with Crego, Depuy, Smith, and Steinruck rounding out the top five.
The Street Stock heat was won by Adam Depuy.
Matt Sheppard had taken the lead at lap 9 of the Modified feature when a thunderstorm with heavy rain hit the speedway, halting the racing action for the night. The remainder of the Modified feature will be contested as part of Championship Night on September 2nd and the 305 Sprint car feature will be run at the top of next Saturday night’s program.
Modified heats were won by Lance Dusett and Matt Sheppard. The 305 Sprint car heat was won by Darryl Ruggles.
