Joey Scarborough Takes First Career Win At Devil’s Bowl

Column By: MIKE WARREN / RPW – WEST HAVEN, VT – With Sunday night’s event at the Devil’s Bowl speedway being postponed to Monday, I got the chance to take the drive down to West Haven, VT for the Coca-cola firecracker. The fans were certainly not disappointed as they saw a great battle in the 35-lap sportsman modified feature event.

Joey Scarborough has been a driver who has been cutting his teeth at many places around the northeast, with wins at a few different tracks. However, one that has eluded him so far has been the Devil’s Bowl speedway. The young gun from Brandon, VT had two legends of the Devil’s Bowl speedway on his back bumper in the last few laps, further showing how tough it is to get it done.

After taking the lead on lap 5, a caution for Randy Howe with just two laps remaining, set up Kenny Tremont to the outside of the 38, with Vince Quenneville Jr. behind him re-starting 3rd.

Off the re-start, Tremont got a great run to the outside, but as they came around the white flag, Scarborough bobbled, causing his machine to shoot high, making contact with the 115 machine, sending him up the racetrack and allowing Quenneville to slip by for second.

In victory lane, Scarborough told announcer Justin St. Louis the win was “unbelievable,” saying he remembers what it was like to go to victory lane watching as a kid, and now it’s the other way around.

NOTES From Devil’s Bowl:

– 30 cars made their way to the speedway for the week-night event.

– Marty Kelly III pulled double-duty on the night. After competing in sportsman competition and unfortunately not making the show, he went up to the tower with Justin St. Louis to help call the feature action.

– It was a big night for sportsman campaigner Josh Sunn, as this was his first race back at the track since an accident where he broke his neck at a midget at Bear Ridge. Sunn qualified for the 35 lap feature but had trouble early in the event.

– It was a tough night for Jim Ryan as his bad luck continued. He finished one spot out of a transfer position in the heat race, then had trouble in the B-Main as well. He ended up getting into the show and working his way back up toward the front, but it was still a tough night.

– The same could be said for Tim Laduc, who was last week’s winner. The Orwell express got into a jingle early in the contest, and worked his way back up for a top 10 finish.

– It was the 2nd appearance of the season at Devil’s Bowl for the “Lunchbox” Chad Edwards. He had to start behind handicapped cars, but had a great run coming home with a top 5 finish.

– In the Super Stock feature event, it looked like Joey Trudeau had the event won, but Chris Murray came out of nowhere to take the lead with just a few laps to go. Trudeau said in a post-race speech that the car continued to get looser and looser by the lap.
