Lucas Wolfe Claims Night One Of ESS Speedweeks At Can-Am
Column By: ROBERT SYMONDS / RPW – LAFARGEVILLE, NY – Lucas Wolfe makes the long haul from Mechanicsburg, Pennslyvania to claim the victory for night one of the Empire Super Sprints Donath Motorworx Speedweeks at the Can-Am Speedway.
Starting from the pole, Wolfe was able to pull away from outside pole starter Danny Varin off the wave of the green flag. Strong competitors we’re making their moves with grip all over the speedway. Mark Smith climbed from his eighth starting position to take second place on lap seven. However, Wolfe was making it look easy with a straightaway advantage when Smith had taken the runner up position. With a caution free race, Wolfe was able to hold that straightaway lead and get the win despite the charge from Mark Smith. Danny Varin would hold on for third with Mike Mahaney finishing fourth and Matt Tanner fifth.
“It’s great to come up here and run different style tracks,” Lucas Wolfe said in victory lane, while Mark Smith was hoping for a caution. “We needed one with about five to go. We were fast and I kept timing as I was coming.”
Notables: 34 cars checked into the Can-Am Speedway for the Empire Super Sprints. This is Wolfe’s fourth win on the Empire Super Sprints Tour and leads the charge going into Night Two for Canandaigua Speedway on Thursday evening. Dylan Swiernik was running a solid race coming from his 18th starting spot and was running seventh when the motor blew with one lap to go.
Dave Marcucelli continues a great run in his 2017 with winning the DirtCar Sportsman Series Feature. After taking the lead early, Marcucelli set the pace for the field running laps over 100 MPH. This however was not the end as Taylor Caprara stalked Marcucelli and took the lead at the halfway mark. Only a caution at the white flag would slow the field since lap two. Marcucelli would take the lead on the ensuing restart and prevail as the victor, Caprara would finish second and Rocky Warner in third.
