Albany-Saratoga Champions Aiming For Glory At Oswego During Super DIRT Week

Story By: TOM BOGGIE / ALBANY-SARATOGA SPEEDWAY – MALTA, NY – Although the 2019 racing season at Albany-Saratoga Speedway has come to an end, many of the track’s regulars, including three track champions, will be heading to Oswego Speedway next week hoping to find more glory at Super DIRT Week.

Marc Johnson, the 2019 modified champion, is again expected to be doing double-duty at Super DIRT Week, competing in both the Salute to the Troops 150 for 358 modifieds on Saturday, Oct. 12, as well as the Billy Whittaker 200 on Sunday, Oct. 13. Last year, Johnson finished a career-best fifth in the 200.

The Albany-Saratoga regular to keep an eye on is “The Awesome Australian” Peter Britten. Britten won the 358 modified 150 last year at Oswego, and finished third in the Billy Whittaker 200. In the last two seasons, he’s finished third and second in the 200, respectively, and would love to put his Troyer chassis into victory lane at Oswego.

Brett Hearn, the eight-time modified champion at Albany-Saratoga, will also be doing double duty next weekend. He was fourth in the 358 race last year, but had problems in the 200 and finished 26th. He finished second in the 200 in 2016.

Ken Tremont Jr. is expected to make his 39th consecutive start in the October Classic. He finished 11th in the 200 for big block modifieds last year.

Don’t be surprised to see an Albany-Saratoga Speedway regular sitting in victory lane after either the Sportsman Chevrolet Performance 75 or the Wilkins RV Pro Stock 50.

Last year, the Pro Stock race at Oswego looked like it was going to belong to an Albany-Saratoga regular, as Chucky Dumblewski and rookie Josh Coonradt made up the front row. Dumblewski led every lap except the last one, as C.D. Beauchamp did a bump-and-run on Dumblewski coming out of the fourth turn on the final lap to come away with the victory. In the process, Beauchamp ended the five-race Super DIRT Week winning streak of Rob Yetman. Veteran Kim Duell finished fourth last year, with Coonradt running into problems and finishing 27th.

Duell could be one of the best bets at Oswego next weekend. The former Albany-Saratoga Speedway champion, who finished second at Oswego in 2017, skipped the DIRTcar Pro Stock Series race at Albany-Saratoga on Sept. 21 because he was busy getting a new car together for Oswego.

Coonradt won the Albany-Saratoga title in his second full season in a Pro Stock, and should also be a contender for the win at Oswego.

Connor Cleveland, riding the momentum from winning his first sportsman title at the historic Malta track, will lead the Albany-Saratoga contingent of talented sportsman drivers at Oswego. Last season, Albany-Saratoga regulars made up three of the top five spots. Robert Bublak Jr. finished second, losing the lead to Shane Pecore on the final lap, Cleveland was fourth and Andrew Buff was fifth.
