Story By: BRETT DEYO / SHORT TRACK SUPER SERIES – MINERSVILLE, PA – Take two! Since a June 5 rainstorm washed away the scheduled ‘Anthracite Assault’ at Big Diamond Speedway, race fans have been awaiting the new date. Finally, on Monday, July 16, their wait is over.
The only combined Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By Sunoco Halmar International North Region and Velocita-USA South Region event of 2018 takes over the Minersville, Pa., oval in a 50-lap main paying $5,000 to win, $1,000 for 10th and $400 to take the green flag.
The ‘Anthracite Assault’ serves as Race No. 4 of both the North and South Regions.
In North Region action, Stewart Friesen won the opening two events at Orange County Fair Speedway in Middletown, N.Y., and Outlaw Speedway in Dundee, N.Y. Jerry Higbie of Newburgh, N.Y., broke into the win column at Accord (N.Y.) Speedway in the most recent event held on July 3.
The South Region has produced three different winners. Ryan Watt picked up the Georgetown (Del.) Speedway opener in March. Jeff Strunk bested the Bridgeport (N.J.) Speedway April field. Matt Sheppard dominated the late stages of the Delaware International Speedway (Delmar, Del.) 50-lap event on Memorial Day.
Now, all eyes are on Pennsylvania’s Coal Region.
