Wrapping Up February, Southern Raceway Podiums For Wayne Johnson
Story By: BRYAN HULBERT / TWOC RACING – MILTON, FL – Wrapping up the month of February in Florida, Wayne Johnson and the TwoC Racing/Outlaw Wings entry was in action with USCS at Southern Raceway in Milton, Fla. on Friday, February 23 and Saturday, February 24 with the team picking up back-to-back third-place finishes at the three-eighths-mile oval.
Advancing through Friday’s Heat Race to start fifth, Johnson raced to third in the late stages of the A-Feature with Matt Covington and race leader, Terry Gray, in sight.
“We were rolling pretty good and I feel like I should have won Friday, but the way the track was, it was just hard to pass,” commented Wayne. “I actually got past [Matt] Covington on the outside through one and two for second at one point and just didn’t get whoaed up enough in three and four and slid up. I felt like if I hadn’t missed that, I could have run Terry [Gray] down.”
Hitting the ground running on Saturday night, Wayne tore through his Heat Race to win from the seventh starting spot. Into the A-Feature starting fourth, the track didn’t change as much as Wayne had anticipated.
“They worked on the track and gave us a nice racing surface and it actually ended up staying longer than I thought it was going to be so we ended up getting the car too tight in the feature,” stated Wayne. “At the start, it wasn’t too bad, but there at the end, I was just hanging on. Once the fuel load came off, the car started getting over on the right front but all in all, it was good. We’re learning a lot, and that’s way we came down here so we’re ready to go this season.”
Looking ahead, the plans for the weekend find Wayne pointed west to Hattiesburg Speedway (Hattiesburg, Miss.) on Friday, March 2 and Magnolia Motor Speedway (Columbus, Miss.) on Saturday, March 3 with USCS.
