Matt Hirschman Rolls To Third RoC Win Of ’17 In Super 67 At Oswego
Story By: RACE OF CHAMPIONS – OSWEGO, NY – Matt Hirschman of Northampton, Pa., is rolling through the 2017 season right now. On Saturday in the “Super 67” for the Race of Champions Asphalt Modified Series fueled by Sunoco Hirschman took the lead early on in the event and never looked back as he went on to record his third series in of the season. It was his 5th consecutive victory in asphalt modified competition.
“This is another great win for us,” smiled Hirschman from victory lane surrounded by his family. “This is a family effort for us and today we had a great car. Once we got to the lead, I knew Patrick (Emerling) was coming but I had enough to hold on get us here. This streak we are on right now is a personal best in my career and something I am extremely proud of. We will definitely take it.”
Mike Leaty of Williamson, N.Y., posted the fastest time in group time trials and won his qualifying race and looked to be on pace to repeat Bryan Sherwood’s performance at Oswego in May when he redrew the pole for the race, but Hirschman was able to slip by early in the going off of turn two.
Patrick Emerling of Orchard Park, N.Y., recovered from an early race spin to race back through the field and get to second. Emerling closed in on Hirschman in the late stages, but a long green flag run to close out the 67-lap event kept Emerling from mounting a serious challenge on Hirschman.
Leaty finished 3rd.
Tommy Catalano of Ontario, N.Y., finished 4th and was the last car on the lead lap. Andy Jankowiak of North Tonawanda, N.Y., rounded out the top-five.
Leaty’s fast lap was the second of the season for him as he toured the Oswego oval with a lap of 17.874 seconds with an average of 126.083 mph.
Leaty and Daren Scherer of Binghamton, N.Y., won the qualifying races.
