$10,000 Winner’s Share Set For York County Nationals At Susquehanna
Story By: BRETT DEYO / SHORT TRACK SUPER SERIES – NEWBERRYTOWN, PA – In 2016, it went down as the “race of the season” for the Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By VP.
In 2017, it will be the richest.
On Sunday, July 30, the STSS Velocita-USA South Region descends on Susquehanna Speedway, the Newberrytown, Pa., facility rejuvenated by owner Scott Gobrecht and general manager Kolten Gouse.
The 50-lap York County Nationals will offer $10,000 to the STSS big-block/small-block Modified victor, the most lucrative winner’s share on the series this year. The 10th-place driver will receive $1,000, with $400 to take the green flag. Additional contingencies and bonuses will be on the line for racers, as well.
The Susky visit serves as Race No. 5 of the STSS Velocita-USA South Region with $10,000 awarded to the champion at year-end. Three events have been contested thus far, with Big Diamond Speedway in Minersville, Pa., on deck next Sunday, July 16.
Last year, the return of Modified racing to Susquehanna drew rave reviews from fans and competitors. Three-wide racing was the norm for drivers on the tacky, red Susquehanna clay.
As a result, STSS organizer Brett Deyo and Susquehanna management opted to boost the event’s top prize to $10,000, moving the York County Nationals into an elite group of Northeast Modified races with a five-figure payout going to the winner.
A year ago, a flat tire on Anthony Perrego’s car late in the race paved the way for Ringoes, N.J., star Ryan Godown to take the Susquehanna triumph. Godown won over Ryan Watt, who charged hard late in the going after starting 22nd, Jeff Strunk, Stewart Friesen and Jimmy Horton.
Joining the STSS Modifieds on the card are the Central PA Legends racing for an increased $500 to win and $50 to take the green thanks to sponsorship support from Service Master Clean.
Pit gates will open at 3 p.m. on July 30. Grandstand gates will be unlocked at 4 p.m. The drivers’ meeting takes place at 5:45 p.m., with hot laps at 6:20 p.m. and racing at 7 p.m.
Adult admission is $25 for Adults, $15 (Seniors ages 60 and over & Students ages 13-17). Kids 12 and under are admitted FREE.
