Bobby Varin, Mark Mortensen & Kenny Gates Set Quick Times At Fonda Speedway’s Practice

Story By: RON SZCZERBA / FONDA SPEEDWAY – FONDA, NY – The “Track of Champions” Fonda Speedway held an open practice session for cars in all divisions on Saturday afternoon on a beautiful spring day.

At the conclusion of all sessions, the overall fast times in the top three divisions at the speedway were set by Bobby Varin in the Sunoco Modified division with a lap time of 18.998, Mark Mortensen in the Swagger Factory Apparel Crate 602 Sportsman division with a lap time of 19.804, and Kenny Gates in the Algonkin Motel Pro Stock division with a lap time of 21.944.

Those three drivers were awarded with a $100 bonus for Hazer’s Quick Time by Rob Hazer.

The top five overall times behind Varin in the Sunoco Modified division with their lap time in parenthesis included Craig Hanson (19.132), Brian Pessolano (19.191), Josh Hohenforst (19.192), and Adam McAuliffe (19.290).

The top five overall times behind Mortensen in the Swagger Factory Apparel Crate 602 Sportsman division were Brian Calabrese (19.872), Brian Borst (19.945), defending Track Champion Chad Edwards (19.978), and Cody Clark (19.982).

The top five overall times behind Gates in the Algonkin Motel Pro Stock division were Steve Cosselman (22.420), Chuck Dumblewski (22.550), Shane Playford (22.615), and Gary Silkey (22.650).

Shane Jablonka set fast time in the Montgomery County Office for Aging Limited Sportsman with a lap time of 20.476 while defending Dual Overhead Cam Cruiser Champion John Napoli (25.512), and Danny Varin (17.343 in a Sprint Car) set fast times in their respective divisions.

Next Saturday, April 17 the “Track of Champions” will present opening day for the 70th consecutive season of racing at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds facility presented by Alton & Carole Palmer of Palmer’s Service Center.

In competition on April 17 will be all divisions including the Sunoco Modifieds, the Swagger Factory Apparel Crate 602 Sportsman, the Algonkin Pro Stocks, the Montgomery County Office for Aging Limited Sportsman, and the Fonda Fair Cruisers. Starting time for the racing events in April have gates opening at 3:30 p.m. with hot laps at 5:30 p.m. and racing at 6:30 p.m.
