Short Track Super Series To Sanction March 20th ‘Icebreaker’ At Selinsgrove; Other News

Story By: BRETT DEYO / SHORT TRACK SUPER SERIES – SELINSGROVE, PA – Since the inception of the Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By Sunoco in 2014, there has never been a sanctioned event at Selinsgrove Speedway.

That will change in March.

Management of Selinsgrove Speedway and the STSS have jointly announced the Saturday, March 20, 2021 ‘Icebreaker’ event at the Snyder County half-mile oval will be part of the ’21 STSS schedule.

Both the STSS-sanctioned Modifieds and Crate 602 Sportsman will be in competition at the event.

STSS Modifieds race 40 laps for $5,000 to win, $1,000 for 10th and $400 to take the green flag from a purse totaling more than $25,570. STSS Crate 602 Sportsman will take part in a 25-lap feature with $1,500 going to the winner and $100 to take the green flag.

South Region points will be offered for both the Modifieds and Crate 602 Sportsman.

A complete information sheet will be released in the coming days.

The event takes place one day prior to the scheduled STSS Modified 40-lap event at neighboring Port Royal (Pa.) Speedway on Sunday, March 21, setting up a weekend of Modified racing in the Keystone State.

STSS management plans to release a complete ’21 schedule by mid-December.

Modifieds have not competed at Selinsgrove Speedway since March 2013 in a small-block Modified event won by Duane Howard. An unsanctioned event was scheduled for last March but ultimately fell to COVID-19 restrictions.

Previous Modified winners at Selinsgrove include Dave Kelly (big-block, 1982), Rick Laubach (big-block, 2008), Pat Ward (small-block 2009, 2010), Danny Johnson (big-block 2009, 2011), Matt Sheppard (big-block, 2010), Jeff Strunk (small-block, 2011), Duane Howard (small-block 2012, 2013), Ryan Godown (big-block, 2012) and Billy Pauch Sr. (big-block, 2012).

Day Motor Sports of Tyler, Texas has been named the official distributor of the American Racer tires utilized by the STSS Cajun Region big-block/small-block Modifieds during the ’21 season.

The Southern Super Modified Series has been rebranded the STSS Cajun Region for next season and beyond, with marketing, scheduling and contingency award support offered by BD Motorsports Media LLC. An announcement during the recent ‘Cajun Swing’ in November set the path for the series under the STSS moniker.

American Racer will be the tire of choice for the STSS Cajun Region for the ’21 season and beyond as the Northeast-style Modifieds regain momentum in Louisiana and Texas.

Tire compounds for the ’21 season are as follows:

  • Left-Front: American Racer SD 33
  • Right-Front: American Racer SD 38
  • Left-Rear: American Racer SD 38 or SD 44
  • Right-Rear: American Racer SD 44 or SD 48

The agreement will also allow for a base point fund for the series, which is anticipated to hold approximately a dozen events from March through October. Should the series draw an average of 15 cars over 12 events, the base point fund will be approximately $4,000. That number, of course, can be increased by additional marketing partners or a higher car count.
