Doctor Was In Friday Night At Outlaw Speedway; Danny Johnson Takes Checkers

Story By: KENNY SHUPP / OUTLAW SPEEDWAY – DUNDEE, NY – The Doctor of Modified Racing finally made a house call into the Outlaw Speedway victory lane this past Friday after a spirited battle with his current car owner, Bossman Tyler Siri and The Hurricane Steve Paine.

Piloting a machine owned by Siri and sponsored by Tim Gibson of Sunrise Insulation, the Doctor lined up fifth on the starting grid, but it was front row starters, Hurricane Steve Paine and Bossman Tyler Siri bringing the field to the opening green flag.

Siri would lead the opening seventeen laps holding Paine at bay as only two yellow flags would slow the pace on laps fifteen and sixteen. The cautions allowed The Doctor to keep both Paine and Siri within his cross hairs and he moved into the lead on lap eighteen and from there it was clear sailing for the Hall of Fame veteran. With the win, the monkey is now off the back of Johnson who has struggled at times over the past two seasons and puts another new face in the 2020 Outlaw Speedway victory lane. Paine was able to wear Siri down in the closing laps and took over the second spot but was unable to back up last week’s winning performance in Fall Series Event 1. None the less another solid performance for Hurricane Paine. Bossman Siri held off Jordan Siri as the father/son duo finished third and fourth respectively and as the double checkered flags waved all three of the Siri owned machines were scored within the top five finishers. Jim LaRock backed up last week’s third place finish piloting the Herbie Wright owned Modified as he came across the line in fifth.

In the Sunrise Insulation American Racer Tire twenty-five lap feature event it was a flip flop of the top two finishers. It was last week’s runner-up, Kenny Peoples Jr’s. turn to take the win as Fall Series Event 1 winner, Donnie Lawson had to settle for second. Lawson would lead the opening fifteen laps which included one yellow and one red flag on laps five and six, but when the green lights were on the racing at the front was at a fever pitch with Lawson, Peoples and 2018 Track Champion, Chris Fisher slugging it out for the top spot. Peoples Jr., who started outside the second row finally moved by Lawson at the lap sixteen mark and would go on to his first win of the 2020 season. Lawson and Fisher would battle back and forth with both holding the second spot, but it was Lawson coming home second at the checkers with Fisher rounding out the top three podium finishers. June 12, 2020 feature winner, Dale Welty finished fourth as Billy Paine made it two top five finishes within the first two Fall Series feature events by claiming the fifth spot. Outside of Welty: Peoples Jr., Lawson, Fisher and Paine were all in the top five last week as well showing their consistency.

In the Stan’s No Tubes Street Stock Division eleven machines took to the speedway for their twenty-lap feature event with Jared Hill and Chuck Winslow bringing the field to the opening green flag. Adam Depuy moved into the lead almost immediately from his inside second row starting spot and led throughout the remainder to nail down his first feature win at the track in 2020. Only one caution on lap three would slow the pace as the machines of Lanson Albanese, Aksel Jensen and Chuck Winslow would thrash for the runner-up position, but at the end it was Depuy claiming the win in a blanket finish with the top four less than two seconds apart. Albanese, Jensen and Winslow would finish in that order while Jimmy Grant would round out the top five.

In the Hoosier Tire Sportsman Division it appeared as though Alex Payne was well on his way to making it three feature wins in a row, but late race problems sidelined the third generation pilot and he was relegated to a tenth place finish. Payne had just taken over the top spot on lap eighteen after lining up eighth on the starting grid as pole sitter, Zach George and second row starter, Brett Buono would both lead in the early going. AJ Lloyd would take command of the lead on lap nine and hold onto that position until Payne took over and led for just one lap before his departure. From there Zach George would reassume the lead and hold off Buono over the remaining six circuits to pick-up his first win at the popular Yates County speed plant in 2020. Tommy Paine would put on a solid performance to claim third and with that all three Steve Paine owned machines finished in the top five in all their respective classes of action. Timmy Borden Jr. came home for fourth as AJ Lloyd would round out the top five after leading laps nine thru seventeen.

In the IMCA Hobby Stock Division a solid sixteen car field took the opening green flag for their twenty lap A Main event. Last week’s winner, Marc Minutolo started in the last row, mowed the field down and was able to get by Jeredd Dennis late in the event and go on for his second win in as many weeks and fifth overall during the 2020 campaign. Like he did in Fall Series Event 1, Dennis chased Minutolo across the line to once again claim second while Grayson Albanese would follow in third. Regular season Hobby Stock point runner-up, Jamie Eldredge Jr. would finish fourth as he was chased across the line by Brian Lloyd in fifth.

In the Mighty 4 Cylinder Mini Stock Division it was yet another new face finding victory lane on this night. 2017 4 Cylinder Track Champion and second- generation pilot, Mike Stone has had more than his share of struggles over the past few seasons. However, Stone was able to put all that behind him and came home with a well-deserved twenty lap feature win. What made Stone’s win even more impressive is that he started deep in a sixteen- car field littered with talent. Scott Lehman and Jack Ormsby would lead the field to the opening green flag, but it was Stone who passed the most cars having come from the ninth spot to claim the popular win. Regular season fourth place point finisher and two- time 2020 feature winner, Scott Lehman Jr. lined up next to Stone at the start and claimed the runner up position. August 14 feature winner, Kenneth Evans rode home for third while first and second row starters, Jack Ormsby and Derrick Evans would race in the lead pack all event to claim fourth and fifth at the finish.

Congratulations to all competitors.
