Frankie Herr Makes Third Visit To Victory Lane In 2020 At BAPS Motor Speedway
Story By: KALI LANDIS / BAPS MOTOR SPEEDWAY – YORK HAVEN, PA – It’s roughly a month away from the Gary Wolford Super Sportsman 100, and Frankie Herr has it circled on his calendar.
It’s a race that is close to Herr’s heart. He’s won it more than any other driver in history, and even though there is a lot of racing to be done before the middle of September, Herr is getting things in order.
That means gaining speed and confidence. And it looks like Herr has it after capturing his third BAPS Super Sportsman main event of the season Saturday on Kid’s Night at BAPS Motor Speedway.
“It takes more and more to get excited, especially after some things that have happened in the past, but we always put those behind us and go racing next week and run as hard as we can,” Herr said.
“My team never stops digging, and Bill Devine never stops digging. It’s been ups and downs, and that’s how racing goes. I’m just happy to be sitting out front.
“It would be like the first one,” said Herr of the Super Sportsman 100 on Sept. 12. “It’s a lot of fun to win that race. It pays well, and it really makes it feel like you accomplished something when you pull that one off. I think we are going to be ready for it.”
Getting to Victory Lane was going to be a tough chore for Herr in this one. Scott Dellinger started on the pole and jumped out to the early lead.
Dellinger set a pretty good pace. Meanwhile, Herr, who started eighth on the grid, was methodically making his way to the front.
Herr did get the benefit of two cautions, the first on Lap 16 and second on Lap 18. That helped get the Carlisle, Pa., driver in the hunt, and once he disposed of Jay Fannasy, he knew he had a shot at the win.
“That last restart, I learned something,” Herr said. “I drove by Jay with ease, and I had to get back in a rhythm and get back where I was. I had a good bite there, and I knew when I got back to second, [Scott] was hanging way too bad, and I was going to drive past him.
“Our car got better as the race went on. Like I said, my race team, they are the best. I wish Kenny [Edkin] would’ve been up there racing us. I love racing him. He’s a hell of a racer, and he makes you sit up in the seat and get it done.”
Herr got past Matt Ondek for second on the last restart and stalked Dellinger, finally taking the lead on the 23rd circuit. As for Edkin, who elected to start 24th in an attempt to win an extra $1,000, he never got close to Herr.
At the stripe, it was Herr by 1.67 seconds. Dellinger, Matt Ondek, Chase Gutshall, and Edkin completed the top five.
Tommy Slanker took the lead from Ben Whitaker and captured an entertaining 20-lap Creekside Auto Sales 358 Late Model event.
Bobby Beard jumped out front and led the first eight laps before stopping during a caution period. That handed the lead to Whitaker, who started the main event on the pole.
Whitaker’s spot at the front was short-lived. Slanker, who started fifth on the grid, got around Beard and didn’t look back over the race distance.
Troy Miller charged from 16th to second in the main event. Whitaker, Joe Lusk, and Charles Potts completed the top five.
In Frankie’s Used Auto Parts/Mike’s Towing Street Stock action, Greg Diehl took the win from his ninth-place starting spot.
Kyle Sizemore jumped out front and led the first six circuits. Jasen Geesaman took over the top spot and led five laps before Diehl took over for good on Lap 12.
Diehl led the rest of the way and took the win. Brian Walls, Geesaman, Sizemore, and Stan Wanner completed the top five.
Billy Workman Jr. claimed the Gene Latta Ford Central PA Legends presented by Baker Door Company main event.
The beginning of the 20-lap feature was marred by a horrific flip by Eric McClane. He climbed from the car and was OK.
When the race went back to green, Brian Racine jumped out front. Zac Smith took over on Lap 2 and led through Lap 7. Workman, who started 12th, made his way to the front and took over on the eighth circuit.
Smith settled for second, with Seth Kearchner, Aaron Updegraff, and Joe Ryan Osborne completing the top five.
The Superior Homes Extreme Stock feature was won by Patrick McClane. He topped Sam Rial, Hunter Fulton, Justin Yohn, and Travis Horan for the victory.
