Bill August Takes Sunday Night Checkers At Glen Ridge Motorsports Park

Story By: JACOB MACDONALD / GLEN RIDGE MOTORSPORTS PARK – FULTONVILLE, NY – Double the points, double the pressure. On a night dubbed “Double Points Night”, the pressure was at the max for all drivers involved and the racing action showed just that.

For the Red Chair 602 DIRTcar Crate Sportsman’s, it was Brendan Gibbons sitting on the pole. It didn’t take long for the pressure to get to drivers as an incident occurred in the first turn of the race that collected numerous drivers including the second-place man in points, Travis Green. Off the restart, Joe Orlando assumed the lead and shortly after that, a caution flag was displayed for an accident on the front stretch that included Hunter Lapp & Addison Bowman. The driver on the move when racing got back underway was Bill August in the 50. August caught and passed Orlando on the 13th circuit of the 30 lap feature. A lap later, the yellow lights were turned back on once again. This time, it was for Jerry Cohn’s car slowing in turn 4. Joe Orlando got a great restart on the outside and used that to power back around August. Once again, a caution came out as the points leader Tucker O’ Connor was turned around at the bottom of turns 3 & 4. August imitated Orlando’s previous restart and drove around the 14 of Orlando. This time, August held onto the lead as “Nubbz” pulled away for his first career win in the 602 Crate Sportsman’s (Tied for 1st all-time in limited sportsman wins). Joe Orlando would have to settle for second, Cody Ochs took home third place, followed by Scott McCoy in fourth and Andrew Buff rounded out the top five.

In the Yurkewecz Auto Crushers DIRTcar Prostocks, Buck Gasner led the field to the green flag. Things got out of hand quickly as an incident occurred on lap 2 that included Gasner, Cousin Luke Horning and Josh Coonradt. Andy Graves assumed the lead after the incident and immediately felt pressure from the 8k of Justin Knight. Knight wasn’t the only car on the move as the 49 of Ivan Joslin and 27 of Nick Stone were close in tow. After a lap 8 caution, Joslin made his move and took the lead at the halfway point of the race with Stone grabbing second shortly after. From there, Joslin and Stone proceeded to have the best race of the night as they raced side by side for the remainder of the race. When the checkered flag flew however, it was Joslin taking the win. Stone would finish in the runner up spot, Cousin Luke rebounded for third, Josh Coonradt finished in fourth and Andy Graves rounds out the top five.

The street stock 15 lap feature got underway with Kenny Allen & Damon Anderson leading the field to the green. Anderson took the lead as the car on the mover early was the 93 of Jason Casey. Casey was quickly closing in on Andersons back bumper when a caution came out of the 99 of Kenny Allen going around in turns 3 & 4. Casey pulled off the track under that yellow for mechanical issues. When racing got back underway, the 77 of James Dellea who worked his way up to second made contact with the 5 of Anderson, turning him around. The 77 was sent to the back. This gave the lead to the 627 of Harley Shepard. Sheppard drove the race of his life and appeared to be able to pickup the win. However, out of turn 2 on the final lap, contact was made between Shepard and Kenny Allen (who sneakily worked his way back through the field), allowing the 91 of Matt Mosher to get around them both and picked up the win. Jason Barrett would finish in second and Damon Anderson rebounded to a podium finish.

Issac Walker would sit on the pole for the 20 lap limited sportsman feature. However, Garrett Poland wouldn’t wait long to pounce as he took away the lead out of turn two. Off of a lap four yellow for Walker going around it turn four, Peter Lorenzo III was on the charge and he would work around Poland on lap 12 and pulled away to take his first career win. Troy Zilles got around Poland for second in the last few laps. Poland would finish third, James Venditti and Shane Larman would finish fourth and fifth, respectively.

Nick Auspelmyer led the field to the flagstand for the Northeast Paving and Sealcoating All Star Slingshots and led wire to wire and wouldn’t be contested as he took his first career win at the ridge. The battle for second however, looks like a swarm of bees. In the end, Scott Sprague would finish second and Dan Ballard would round out the podium.

In the NPS Jr. Slingshots, it was “Kid Dynamite” Frank Twing Jr going wire to wire and back to back after holding off a late race charge from the 771 of Lucas Duncan.

In the mini stocks, Josh Kane continues his dominant season as he is 4 for 4 in the dual cams and Ray Young picked up another win in the single cams.
