Visit to Victory Lane Caps Very Successful Trip To Lake Ozark For Donny Schatz & Team
Story By: TYLER ALTMEYER / TONY STEWART RACING – BROWNSBURG, IN – Ultimately leaving the Show-Me State with their second World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series victory of the 2020 season, Donny Schatz and Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing put together a near-perfect weekend at Lake Ozark Speedway in Eldon, Missouri, and capped the two-day visit with a pair of podium performances, one of which the aforementioned victory on Saturday, May 30, and the other a third place result on Friday, May 29.
Schatz started 11th on Friday’s grid before making the podium rally, securing third with 10 laps remaining.
Schatz’ victory, his first since DIRTcar Nationals competition at Volusia Speedway Park, was accomplished in dramatic fashion, utilizing a green-white-checkered restart to slide by race leader, Kyle Larson, as the pair were racing toward the white flag. The ten-time World of Outlaws champion, who led a number of circuits through the middle of the main event before losing the top spot to Larson, held off ‘Yung Money’ during the final lap to score the $10,000 payday.
Although the Fargo, North Dakota-native is still third in the World of Outlaws championship chase, the Lake Ozark triumph propelled Schatz to within 28-points of the title lead.
“I decided I was just going to send it,” Schatz said about his winning move. “He would have done the same thing. I got a run on him there in (turns) one and two. We went into (turn) three and I just went. … I was stuck pretty decently. Happy to get the win. It’s about time here. Feels like it’s been forever.
“I’ve been out here 24 years,” Schatz said. “Every night is a learning experience. You just have to take what you learned day in, and day out and just make a decision. At this point it is just instinct. The hard part is getting these cars right, the way you want them to stick with the tires and all of that. My guys, incredible what they’ve done all weekend.”
