RPW Column: Billy Moyer Sr. Collects Win Number 841; Tops Karl Chevrolet 50 At I-55

RPW Column By: ROBERT SYMONDS / RPW – PEVELY, MO – A good day turned into a great night for Karl Chevrolet. The dealership sponsored a return for racing $7,000 event at the Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 in Pevely, MO.

Signing into the pit area was 59 cars and after time trials it was Tanner English with a blistering 13.943 second lap time. Six qualifying heat events were won by Billy Moyer Sr, Daryn Klein, Jake Timm, Kyle Bronson, Devin Moran, and Tim Manville. While the three bmain events were won by Dennis Erb Jr, Mark Voigt, and Ryan Unzicker.

During pre-race ceremonies, Tim Manville and Daryn Klein both elected to go to the back of the lineup to attempt the $10,000 backrow challenge. At the start of the feature event, Billy Moyer Sr grabs the race lead off turn 4 leaving Jake Timm and the rest of the field behind.

It would only take 4 laps for Moyer to have a straightaway lead on the rest of the field, and it would only take a yellow flag that very same lap for his lead to be erased as Brian Shirley slowed on the speedway.

Devin Moran sneaks a peak off the green and gets around Jake Timm for 2nd. Lots of movers and shakers during the restarts as drivers tried to take advantage of the moisture in the speedway while it lasted. Rusty Schlenk got around Bronson for 5th while Brandon Sheppard in his own number 5 car was briefly side by side with Moran for 2nd as Timm fell tumbled back through the field.

Moyer had a 2 second advantage with only 8 laps in the books. Just as he was working through lap traffic on lap 13, the yellow flag would fly again. After this restart, Sheppard got the better of Moran and was able to get to the runner-up spot. Later on in lap traffic, Moyer Sr seemed to slow as the racing line started narrowing. It would only take a few laps for Sheppard to narrow the gap between him and Moyer. Sheppard only got one shot at the lead off turn 4 coming to the white flag. Moyer just cleared a lap car, Sheppard stuffed his car on the bottom groove and Moyer had already powered off the corner leaving Sheppard behind.

Billy Moyer Sr had his arm pumping out the window as he crossed the checkered flag to win the Karl Chevrolet 50 in his Karl Chevrolet Capital Race Cars Late Model.

“The car was awesome and the track felt sorta bottom dominate but it worked out in our favor,” Moyer said in victory lane Saturday night. “Thank you Karl Chevrolet for putting on this show with a great local track. Without this show right, we’d all be sitting at home dreaming about coming to racing.”

This was Billy Moyer’s win number 841 but his first win in Capital Race Car Chassis and he won it in style by winning his own sponsor’s race.
