Tony Stewart Earns Back-To-Back Top 5’s During USCS Action In Mississippi & Florida
Story By: TYLER ALTMEYER / TONY STEWART RACING – BROWNSBURG, IN – Making the swap from 410c.i. sprint car competition to 360c.i. sprint car competition, ‘Smoke’ Tony Stewart continued his 2020 campaign with a pair of stops in Mississippi and Florida during the recent weekend and joined the United Sprint Car Series (USCS) at Hattiesburg Speedway and Southern Raceway, respectively.
The weekend doubleheader turned into back-to-back top-five finishes for the three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion, highlighting his road trip with a runner-up finish at Southern Raceway on Saturday, February 29.
Although it had no bearing on the rest of the program, Smoke kicked-off his evening at Southern Raceway with a USCS dash victory.
Before finishing second at Southern Raceway to Mark Smith, the product of an outside-second row starting position, Stewart put on an impressive display at Hattiesburg Speedway in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, on Friday, February 28, which ended with a hard-fought rally from the tail of the field to finish fifth. Stewart started the main event in the exact same position as he finished, but spun to a stop on the opening lap forcing the Columbus, Indiana-native to restart at the back of the pack.
Smoke’s weekend accomplishments bumped his season top-five total to four, now with two against the All Star Circuit of Champions and two against the USCS.
“It was a solid weekend for our team. I had the opportunity to get around Mark (Smith) on Saturday, but he’s been pretty tough to beat in a 360 lately. It was going to take a lot more than a great car to drive around him,” Tony Stewart said, who restarted right behind Smith at Southern Raceway with three laps remaining. “Regardless, I’m proud of my guys. We’ll do what we can to improve next time.”
Tony Stewart and Tony Stewart Racing will continue their 2020 campaign with another USCS doubleheader in the deep south, this time visiting Chatham Speedway in Chatham, Louisiana, on Friday and Saturday, March 6 & 7.
