RPW Column: Lucas Wolfe Kicks Off 2020 Racing Campaign With A Consistent Week In Volusia
RPW Column By: TRE SHUTTLESWORTH / RPW – BARBERSVILLE, FL – Lucas Wolfe started off his 2020 sprint car campaign as early as possible, taking his #5W sprint car down to Florida to compete in all five nights of the 2020 DIRTcar Nationals at Volusia Speedway Park.
The week included two All Star Circuit of Champions sanctioned races and three World of Outlaws Sprint Car races. Wolfe was unable to score a top ten in Florida, but qualified for the Feature event in each night of racing with an average finishing position of 18.6 over the five events.
His best qualifying effort was fifth Saturday, February 9th’s World of Outlaws sanctioned event.
Night one for Wolfe saw him take 12th best in time trials out of 34 car entered. A fifth place finish in his heat was good enough to transfer to the Feature race where he finished 22nd.
Night two saw Wolfe struggle to 27th in qualifying, but a strong heat run of third place put him in the mid-pack for the Feature. He gained one spot in the race to finish 14th, tied for his best finish at DIRTcar Nationals.
Wolfe opened up the World of Outlaws portion of the week with a 12th place qualifying run. Despite struggling in his heat, he won the Last Chance Showdown and finished 18th in the Feature.
Wolfe qualified well again with a 10th place time trials effort. He finished fourth in his heat but struggled to a 25th place finish in the feature.
He started off the final night of sprint car action at Volusia with his best time trial performance all week with a fifth place run. His 4th place finish in his heat put him 13th on the Feature grid where he dropped a spot to finish off the 2020 DIRTcar Nationals with a 14th place finish.
Wolfe begins the 2020 sprint car season in Pennsylvania from Lincoln Speedway for the Icebreaker 30 on Saturday, February 22. Wolfe is the defending champion of the traditional season opener for Central Pennsylvania sprint car racing, with six total victories at the track.
