RPW Column: Brandon McGill Returning To Weekly Competition At Accord In 2020

RPW Column By: MIKE TRAVERSE / RPW – PLATTEKILL, NY – After a two-season absence, second generation racer Brandon McGill will be returning to weekly competition in the Sportsman division at Accord Speedway in 2020.

“We took a couple of years off. but we will be returning to run the full schedule this season and run for points,” McGill said. “We did race late in 2019 in The Gobbler Sportsman race and finished third in the feature, so I feel our team will be competitive. We may also do some other races at some other tracks, but our main focus is on Accord for 2020. ”

Brandon is the son of John McGill, a popular big block racer at OCFS in the 1980’s. John came out of retirement in the 2000’s and ran in the Modifieds at Accord and has collected four Accord Speedway Modified wins during his time racing there.

Brandon began racing at the age of 4. He started racing go karts at Oakland Valley at age 5 and moved up to slingshots at age 10. He won a 2012 Junior National Slingshot Championship. He started racing in the Sportsman division and has collected 5 wins before taking the break.

McGill is very grateful to those who helped him along in the sport.

“I have to thank my Dad and Joe Giachinta. Without their help, I would have never started racing,” he said. “Joe passed away in 2015, but I will always appreciate the help that he gave to our team. I also want to thank the Mitzner Family for all they have done for me also.”

The self owned #62 is sponsored by Mid Hudson Concrete and B’s Auto Parts (Newburgh). The team is looking for additional sponsors.

“If anyone would like to sponsor us or would like to discuss our racing team, feel free to contact me via Facebook messenger,” Brandon said.

The crew members are Luigi Gigluto, Tom Spignardo and Jared Spiecker, Eddie Mitzner Jr. & Sr., and Gabe Vazquez.

Despite the long layoff, Brandon McGill showed at The Gobbler that he can still run with the Sportsman front runners at Accord. It will not be surprising to see him add to his win total in 2020.
