Tony Stewart Earns USCS Victory At Southern Raceway This Past Weekend
Story By: TYLER ALTMEYER / RONY STEWART RACING – BROWNSBURG, IN – ‘Smoke’ Tony Stewart has been a man on a mission thus far in 2019, this time adding another 360c.i. sprint car victory to his ever-growing racing resume.
Stewart, driver of the Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing/Rush Truck Centers/Ford Performance/Curb Records/Sage Fruit/Absolute Automation & Security/No. 14 sprint car, earned his second victory of the 2019 season, his first in a 360 sprint car, during USCS Outlaw Thunder Tour competition at Southern Raceway in Milton, Florida.
In actuality, Southern Raceway hosted two nights of USCS competition during the recent weekend with Smoke winning the first, followed by a runner-up finish during night two.
Smoke’s victory on Friday night commenced from the outside of row two. Although slowed by two early cautions, the Columbus, Ind., native made progress in a hurry, actually advancing into second by the completion of lap one. Forced to track down race-long leader, Mark Smith, in dirty air, Smoke did just that and eventually slipped by the Central Pennsylvania-native during an intense battle in traffic. Although Smith attempted to get back by the three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion, Smoke was better, eventually pulling away to clinch what was his ninth top-ten finish in 11 starts.
“Anytime you have to race against a guy like Mark Smith, you better be ready to hit the gas pedal because he’s always on the move,” Tony Stewart explained. “We are racing with a lot of confidence right now. Jimmy and Marty continue to give me great race cars. I’m just the lucky guy who gets to go out there and drive them.”
Smoke’s second row starting spot was set up by an impressive heat race rally that consisted of a charge from seventh to finish second.
Stewart nearly went two-for-two on the weekend at Southern Raceway, but Mark Smith returned the favor and proved his dominance on Saturday, ultimately forcing Smoke to settle for second after starting from row three.
A late caution gave Stewart the opportunity to steal the top spot, but the opportunity was not enough.
“It was a fun weekend,” Stewart continued. “If we can keep building on this consistency, good things will continue to happen for us. I’m excited to get back out there and race again.”
Tony Stewart’s upcoming sprint car plans are uncertain. Fans are encouraged to stay alert via social media for further updates.
