Michael Storms Taking On New Challenge In ’19; Chasing Short Track Super Series North Title
Story By: BRETT DEYO / STSS – WURTSBORO, NY – A new challenge is on the horizon for Michael Storms in 2019.
Storms, who earned the nickname ‘Kid Lightning’ during his Sportsman successes, later moved on to excel in the seat of both big- and small-block Modifieds. After taking some time off from the sport, Storms returned to racing close to his Wurtsboro, N.Y., home during recent seasons.
Now, he’s ready to hit the road again.
Storms has announced plans to chase the Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By Sunoco Halmar International North Region in ’19. The North Region $12,500 title fight kicks off Sunday, April 7 at Orange County Fair Speedway in Middletown, N.Y., paying $11,919 to win for 50 laps of racing!
It was last October’s ‘Hard Clay Finale’ race at OCFS that sparked Storms’ interest in chasing the STSS.
“We had a flat tire in the heat race and didn’t get the results we wanted, but our whole team was really impressed with the way the show ran,” noted Storms, who took home the WELD Racing Hard Luck Award from that event for his qualifying misfortunes.
“I wanted a change in scenery and to see some different tracks. The schedule is a good fit for our team.”
Storms is set to battle the STSS Modified contingent with the Rob Sherlock-owned No. 14 Troyer mount powered by a Morrison Performance small-block engine.
The 31-year-old Storms has proven he can win on a variety of tracks. He has reached Victory Lane at the five-eighths-mile at Orange County, the tight Accord (N.Y.) Speedway quarter-mile and the ‘D-Shaped Demon’ of Brewerton (N.Y.) Speedway.
Nine events are on the docket for the STSS North Region docket for ’19 at eight different tracks.
“It will be fun to get out and travel this year,” Storms said.
Not only is Storms a contender on the track for the STSS season. He is also a sponsor. Rob Sherlock Roofing, the business he co-owns, will reward all heat-race winners through the ’19 season on the North Region with $100 cash.
The ’19 STSS season is quickly approaching. Fans across the country will be able to catch all the action live on www.DirtTrackDigest.tv.
