RPW Exclusive: Weiss End’s Pierce’s Quarter Million Chances; Wins MakeUp
Story By: ROBERT SYMONDS / RPW – QUEEN CITY, AZ – In the heat of the desert, 45 Late Models pack the pit area of the Arizona Speedway for the Make Up Round 2 from Last Sunday’s rainout.
After the qualifiers won by Brandon Sheppard, Kyle Beard, Ricky Weiss, Scott Bloomquist, the field was set for the makeup 30 Lap Amain event.
Off the start, Sheppard took off like a rocket pulling ahead by more than a second over the rest of the field. The same couldn’t be said for Scott Bloomquist falling through the field to about 8th as lap 1 completed. Fifth place starter Bobby Pierce quickly made ground on the bottom to go up to 3rd and was looking for 2nd under Chris Simpson. A slip by Pierce put his 32p towards the top side of turn 4 and Simpson was able to get back by for second place.
Through turns 1 and 2, Weiss made his way on the bottom and was able to get by Pierce in the early laps for position 3. Another slip, this time by Simpson would allow Weiss to get by for the runner up position.
With leader Sheppard ahead just by nine tenths of a second, Weiss was able to trek him down and pass him up before entering lap traffic before the half way mark in the race.
With the bottom groove being the dominant lane, drivers were holding their ground for the rest of the way. Only one caution would come out for a medical emergency in the pit area but that wouldn’t stop Ricky Weiss as he was able to get the win for the Round 2 Make up.
Weiss gets the win over Sheppard, Simpson, Junghans, and Pierce for the top 5.
“We had a car to win every night but our car shines best in the slick,” Weiss said in Hoker Trucking Victory Lane. “It definitely is great to get the win today. Hopefully we can make it 2 for 2 tonight.”
With Weiss’s win this afternoon, he ended the chances for Bobby Pierce to win the Keiser Manufacturing Quarter Million Dollar Challenge for winning all events at the Wild West Shootout.
