Brian Shuey & Scott Lee Take BAPS LM Title; Announce Retirements
Story By: BRIAN SHUEY & SCOTT LEE RACING – READING, PA – The late model team of Brian Shuey of Shoemakersville, PA, and Scott Lee of Reading, PA, announced last winter that they intended to chase the BAPS Motor Speedway late model championship in 2018 as part of an aggressive 38-race season schedule which included 12 races at Grandview Speedway and up to 14 races with the Mason Dixon Shoot-Out Series.
The weather may have limited their very aggressive schedule, but it did not impact the team’s performance when they did race. Shuey and Lee captured the 2018 Late Model track championship at BAPS Motor Speedway in their first full season of racing at the York County track.
But also part of “The Plan,” was the likely retirement of both Brian and Scott from racing competition. That also has come to fruition as the team has decided to go out as champions as they announce their retirement as active auto racing competitors.
“I could not have asked for a more appropriate season to be my finale,” commented Shuey. “I have been associated with many great owners and crew members over the years, but this crew is the best bunch of guys I have been around… knowledgeable, professional and dedicated. Over the last three years, they gave me confidence every time we rolled into the track.
The Shuey/Lee time included crew chief Mike Fitzgerald, Jimi Wisser, Kevin Quinter. Tanner Fitzgerald, Greg Snyder and Norm Rapak
When Brian and I teamed up we had a plan of racing for several years and shooting for a point championship,” shared owner Scott Lee. “well, after three years we have accomplished that. The time and effort to develop and have a winning team is more than many can imagine. As most of us on the team are in our 50’s we just did not want to continue this. We reached our goals and decided to call it a career.”
In addition to the BAPS championship, Brian tallied three feature wins in 2018, 2 at BAPS and one at Bedford Speedway in a Mason Dixon Series race. In 23 races this year we have 15 top fives and 17 top tens.
This topped a fine career for Shuey which already included three career Grandview Speedway point championships (2007, 2009 and 2010). Since starting late model racing in 1989 at Silver Spring Speedway in Mechanicsburg, PA; Brian tallied 22 feature wins at Grandview, five wins at Port Royal, two wins at Silver Spring, two wins at the old Big Diamond Raceway and a win at Clinton County Fair Speedway.
“I thank my wife, Renae. And our kids, Erica, Ryan and Lexi. They supported me and allowed me the time to race,” shared Shuey. “Thanks to my late mom and dad who got me started at a young age, I believe, to keep me busy and out of trouble. It kept our family close and I do not think they imagined how far we would take it. That family included my brother, Chris, who was my selfless teammate, fierce competitor and best friend on and off the track.
“Thanks to past car owners, who game me opportunities to race, and the countless crew members,” continued Shuey. “And a thank you to all the fans that came out to the track to support me.”
Both Brian and Scott share their sincere thanks to their sponsors that made 2018 possible. Outten Jeep of Hamburg, PA; Jeff Teets’ Salvage Transport Services of Coplay, PA; Out of Our Minds Art Studio of Macungie, PA; NAPA Auto Parts of Birdsboro, PA; Shankweiler’s Drive-In of Orefield, PA; Buck Rubs Gentleman’s Club of Reading, PA; R&R Games of Birdsboro, PA; Dave Reedy and Penske Shocks; Diamond Billiard and Game Service of Reading, PA; Bowman Renovations of Whitehall, PA; Chuck Schmick’s Eibach Springs and Hershey Racing Engines.
As the final checkered flag falls on the 2018 season, I have no regrets,” closed Shuey. “I have been blessed to compete at a high level for so long!”
