Big Diamond, Short Track Super Series Officials Cancel July 16th ‘Anthracite Assault’

Story By: BRETT DEYO / SHORT TRACK SUPER SERIES – MINERSVILLE, PA – After a rainout on June 5, Big Diamond Speedway offered up a second date for the Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By Sunoco ‘Anthracite Assault’ combination North-South event.

However, Mother Nature did not agree.

A forecast for intensifying showers throughout the evening hours has prompted Big Diamond and STSS management to make the early call and cancel the event for Monday, July 16. The show will return to Big Diamond in 2019.

“Every forecast I have looked at calls for rain later today and tonight,” Big Diamond owner Jake Smulley said. “There is too much risk of the event not going on as planned.”

On June 5, all race teams and fans were in attendance when storms moved over at 7 p.m. STSS organizer Brett Deyo didn’t want a repeat.

“We already had racers and fans here from all over the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic the first time and they spent money in fuel and tolls,” he said. “We definitely don’t want to do that again.”

Racing resumes for the STSS on Wednesday, July 25 (rain date: July 26) at Afton (N.Y.) Motorsports Park for the ‘Afton Action 50’ offering a $5,000 winner’s share and $400 to take the green as part of the Halmar International North Region plus the first-ever STSS Crate 602 Sportsman North Region race paying $1,000 to win.

Then, attention turns to the Sunoco Race Fuels/Insinger Performance York County Nationals at BAPS Motor Speedway in Newberrytown, Pa., offering a huge $10,000 to win as part of the Velocita-USA South Region on Sunday, July 29 (Rain Date: Aug. 19). Central PA Legend Cars complete this doubleheader.
