Short Track Super Series Returns To Outlaw Speedway After Year’s Absence June 20th

Story By: BRETT DEYO / SHORT TRACK SUPER SERIES – DUNDEE, NY – After a year away, the Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By Sunoco rolls into Outlaw Speedway on Wednesday, June 20.

The ‘Outlaw Showdown’ brings the STSS Modifieds to New York’s Finger Lakes Region for a 50-lap main event as part of the series’ 2018 rain-hindered Halmar International North Region.

A purse structure of more than $25,000 awaits the area’s big-block/small-block Modified racers with $5,000 going to the winner, $1,000 for 10th and $400 just to take the green flag. A number of cash and product awards further sweeten the pot for competitors taking part in the event.

The series made its only previous Outlaw Speedway appearance on June 8, 2016 with Matt Sheppard – at the time driving Norm Hansell’s Pennsylvania-based No. 357 – taking the victory over Erick Rudolph, Andy Bachetti, Danny Creeden and Billy Van Pelt.

Sheppard is the reigning Outlaw Speedway champion aboard the Sweeteners Plus No. 92s, utilizing the Dundee facility as home base toward his $11,000 American Racer Cup presented by Sunoco championship a year ago.

Rain has been the story of the STSS Halmar International North Region this season. The only race completed so far was the ‘Hard Clay Open’ on May 8 at N.Y.’s Orange County Fair Speedway. That event, ironically, was postponed by a month due to the lingering winter in southeastern New York.

Stewart Friesen brought the ‘Hard Clay Open’ $5,000-plus home to Sprakers, N.Y., taking the victory over Rick Laubach, Jerry Higbie, Brett Hearn and Billy Decker.

The scheduled Memorial Day weekend event at Thunder Mountain Speedway in Center Lisle, N.Y., fell to a day-long rain. Most recently, heavy rain moved over Big Diamond Speedway in Minersville, Pa., on June 5, nixing the North-South combo ‘Anthracite Assault’ special.

Fans and racers alike are hoping for bright sunshine at Outlaw.

Joining the STSS Modifieds on the card at the ‘Outlaw Showdown’ are the Outlaw Sportsman ($1,500 to win) and Street Stocks ($1,000 to win).
