Short Track Super Series To Take Over Thunder Mountain May 27th

Story By: BRETT DEYO / SHORT TRACK SUPER SERIES – CENTER LISLE, NY – One of the original six Short Track Super Series events during the 2014 inaugural series season, the ‘Lightning on the Mountain’ is an event fans circle on their calendars each season.

Again in 2018, Thunder Mountain Speedway serves as a Memorial Day Weekend stop for the Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By Sunoco Halmar International North Region on Sunday, May 27.

The fifth edition of the ‘Lightning on the Mountain’ is highlighted by a 50-lap STSS big-block/small-block Modified main paying $5,000 to win and $400 to take the green flag, plus the first-ever STSS Crate 602 Sportsman North Region event ($1,000 to win) and Street Stocks ($1,000 to win).

The STSS Halmar International North Region opened its season at Orange County Fair Speedway in Middletown, N.Y., on Tuesday, May 8. Stewart Friesen won the ‘Hard Clay Open’ over Rick Laubach and Jerry Higbie. All three drivers are expected to contend on the Mountain.

The very first ‘Lightning on the Mountain’ took place on May 20, 2014 with Matt Sheppard driving Norm Hansell’s No. 357 to victory over Chad Cook, Vic Coffey, Stewart Friesen and Danny Johnson.

In 2015, the event was held on a rare June Monday night rain date. Brian Malcolm scored the most prolific win of his career, defeating Friesen, Johnson, Anthony Perrego and Jeff Strunk.

Memorial Day weekend was chosen as the date for ’16 and local driver Chad Cook won a rain-shortened 46-lap main over Mike Mahaney, Perrego, Higbie and Colton Wilson.

A year ago, an epic battle to the checkered flag on Memorial Day Sunday saw Perrego defeat Friesen, Andy Bachetti, Jeremy Smith and Ryan Jordan.

Who will it be in 2018? Only time will tell.
