Short Track Super Series ‘Mining Modified Excitement’ June 5th At Big Diamond

Story By: BRETT DEYO / SHORT TRACK SUPER SERIES – MINERSVILLE, PA – The Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By Sunoco will be ‘mining Modified excitement’ on Tuesday, June 5.

For the only time in 2018, the STSS Halmar International North Region and Velocita-USA South Region Modifieds clash on common ground at Big Diamond Speedway.

The ‘Anthracite Assault’ offers points toward both regions from its 50-lap, $5,000-to-win main event and is sure to draw the Northeast’s top Modified talent to Coal Country.

STSS Modified racers will battle for nearly $26,000 in prize money plus cash and product bonuses from this unique, one-time-per-year show.

Fresh off his recent victory at Delaware International Speedway in Delmar, Del., on May 24, ‘Super’ Matt Sheppard leads the South Region standings into Big Diamond. Sheppard holds the top spot over two-time champion Ryan Watt, David Van Horn Jr., Andy Bachetti and Craig Von Dohren.

Three South Region events have been completed thus far in ’18 with a trio of different winners. Watt bested the Georgetown (Del.) Speedway field in March; Jeff Strunk won his first-ever STSS event at Bridgeport (N.J.) Speedway in April; and Sheppard pocketed $5,000 on First State soil last Thursday.

Due to the weather, only one Halmar International North Region race has run, that being Orange County Fair Speedway in Middletown, N.Y., on May 8. Stewart Friesen of Sprakers, N.Y., was victorious over Rick Laubach, Jerry Higbie, Brett Hearn and Billy Decker.

Joining the STSS Modifieds on the ‘Anthracite Assault’ doubleheader are the STSS Open Sportsman in Race No. 1 of their five-race series ($1,000 to win) and XCel 600 Modifieds.
