Modified Summer Slam Season Opener This Sunday At Five Mile Point

Story By: ANDREW HARPELL / FIVE MILE POINT SPEEDWAY – KIRKWOOD, NY – The third year of the very successful Shakelton NAPA Auto & Truck Parts Modified Summer Slam is ready to get underway this Sunday.

The Modified season opening event is scheduled for this Sunday at 4 p.m. Nick Rochinski from Dickson City, PA is the reigning Modified Summer Slam Champion. The 30 lap race this Sunday will pay $2,000 to the winner.

On Saturday the speedway will host an open practice session beginning at 1 p.m. Grandstand admission for the practice is free with the donation of a non-perishable food item to benefit CHOW.

The Modified Summer Slam race this Sunday is the first of four races held at the speedway as part of the program. A separate point fund is established for the top ten drivers in the final four race points. The Modified Summer Slam Champion will again earn $2,000.

A big field of Modified teams is expected for the first of the four races this Sunday. Last Saturday over twenty Modified teams took to the quarter mile oval for testing. All of the teams are looking to get the jump on the new surface. This Saturday will be their last opportunity prior to the opening race on Sunday.

This past Saturday the brand new clay surface got a big workout and held up fantastic. During the day a three hour testing session was held followed by the night time racing program. The track held up great and the racing was fantastic.

Joining the Modifieds on Sunday will be Summer Slam events for the Street Stocks, Wingless Sprints and 600 Modifieds. The Four Cylinders will compete in their Fantastic Five race number 2. The Street Stock event will also serve as a Fight Night All-Star Series event. A big field of cars are expected this Sunday.
