Herrera Wraps Up Texas Sprint Car Nationals With Podium Finish
Story By: BRYAN HULBERT / JOHNNY HERRERA RACING – FORT WORTH, TX – Johnny Herrera’s weekend at the Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track was one of constant improvement, as the Mesilla Valley Transportation No. 45x ended with a weekend high third place finish to close out Tony Stewart presents the Vankor Texas Sprint Car Nationals.
“It was a good weekend. We could have been better the first night with the car. We didn’t free it up enough so we were just there. Not that it was horrible, had we started a little closer to the front we probably would have stayed there too,” stated Herrera.
Starting Friday with a runner-up finish in the fourth Heat Race, Herrera’s passing points set him 11th in the A-Feature where the checkered flag would fall on a 10th place finish.
“We maintained. It wasn’t good enough to just drive by people, but they weren’t passing us either.”
Winning his Heat Race on Saturday put Johnny in the redraw where he drew the fifth starting spot with the car able to move around the track as needed.
“We put our heads together after Friday night and kept making changes throughout Saturday. Having Chris [Stivers] back this year, after not having him with us full-time the past two years, it takes us a night it seems like to get where we want to be. We changed our bar combination and changes some things on the car that really made it better”
Looking ahead, Herrera will take the weekend off as the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by Sawblade.com readies for its eastern swing with stops at Paducah International Speedway on April 27, Williams Grove Speedway on May 4, and Selinsgrove Speedway on May 5. Going into the three-race swing, Herrera sits third in points with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by Sawblade.com; 35 points out of the lead.
The 2018 season marks the 34th year of racing for Johnny Herrera which includes over 140 victories in various forms of Sprint Car competition.
